The Aude, in Cathar country, possesses a patchwork of contrasting landscapes and lands, surrounding its centre, the city of Carcassonne. Aude is composed of five lands ("Pays" in french), with their own unique qualities, waiting for you to discover!

The Cathar country is steeped history of a long gone reilgious sect - the Cathars -  Undiscovered - until now. The Aude Valley - pronounced 'Ode' - lies between Carcassonne, Perpignan, the eastern side of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean -  a superb limestone area, with dramatic gorges, superb mountain scenery and varied walking opportunities. This land is unique - its geology world famous, it's past history so unusual with a medieval past associated with the Cathar religious sects. Wherever you walk in this beautiful land, there are reminders of a past way of life, through its dramatic castles and chateaux. Romans knew the value and strategic importance of the area as well, and we come across their stewardship at every corner. As well as landscapes and climate that is gentle, the area is deeply ingrained with culture - woven into every part of this land. You will pass and sometimes explore Cathar castles, sometimes you come across history of the several peoples who have survived here - Celts, Spaniards, Romans and of course the Cathars themsleves. It is a fiercely independent area, its peoples form part of the old country of Catalonia, with peoples in Northern Spain and Southern France. The walking is some of the finest in Europe - yet so secret, so undiscovered...
