The Corbières
Tucked away in a triangle between Narbonne, Perpignan and Carcassonne, the Corbières region is one of the wildest, most unspoilt parts of the Languedoc. From Durban-Corbières, the Mediterranean is only 15 minutes' drive away, but banish clichéd images of the south of France: the landscape here is dominated by dramatic wetlands as a series of lakes filled with flamingos and herons run parallel to sandy beaches and resorts such as Bages and Peyriac – long favoured by painters and poets. Start driving inland and the landscape quickly changes to the bare, arid foothills of the Pyrenées, called Les Causses. This is the historic pays Cathare, where high mountain ridges are topped off by spectacular castles, dating back to religious disputes in the Middle Ages...

Villa Nouguiès - Durban-Corbières
Durban-Corbières is a little village built on a hillside in the Languedoc-Rousillon region of southern France. There are actually two parts to the village; the mediaeval town which climbs the hillside towards the old château and church at the top, and the new part of town, which is based on the opposite bank of the river. The old town, in typically Languedocian style, straggles charmingly up the hillside, with narrow winding streets and steep steps flanked with terracotta pots of vibrantly coloured flowers. The houses, built of local stone, have painted shutters to keep out the winter winds and the hot summer sun, and look from the outside at least, as though they have remained unchanged for centuries. The new part of town consists of modern villas and houses, and also offers the amenities needed for everyday life. There is a Mairie, school, post office, ‘Tabac’, hotel, restaurant, pharmacy, bank, boulangerie and a petrol station, so both inhabitants and visitors are well catered for here!

Château Gléon Montanié - Durban-Corbières

A.O.P. CorbièresThe origins of the Domaine de Gléon estate can be traced back to ancient times. Evidence of this lies in the many Gallo-Roman and Visigoth remains (Gaufresenque pottery, pre-Romanesque chapel). For ten centuries the estate belonged to the Treille-Gléon-Durban-Narbonne family. Château Gléon guarded access to the Hautes-Corbières. It was besieged by the Spanish in 1503. The last Marquis of Gléon sold the estate to the ancestors of the current owners in 1861. Since then, the Château Gléon has been run by the Bonnes family, and latterly by the Montanié family, handed down from father to son. There have thus been six generations safeguarding the prosperity and quality of the castle's lands. The first "bottling" dates back from the end of the 19th century. The Estate lies at the gateway to the Hautes-Corbières, in the canton of Durban, attached to the village of Villesèque-des-Corbières, at the entrance to what is known as Paradise Valley. It covers 303 ha/750 acres, including 50 ha/150 acres of vineyards...

Randonnée
La Serre de Roquefort-des-Corbières

La Serre de Roquefort-des-Corbières

This journey from Roquefort des Corbières, long ago was close to our heart and it is time to do it before the summer heat has settled. The absence or rather the rarity of the shade and the water are put here. La Tramontane is also to be taken into account, although we do not find it extremely unpleasant. Under these conditions, this loop-shaped route will allow you to enjoy the scenery in complete tranquility from the heights. The clad yellow markings are present and well visible and precise. The start of the walk takes place between Cellier de Roquefort and the Café du Marché, at the mural. Go to the rue des Trois-Moulins and follow the Chemin Camin-del-Bosc about 300 meters. This route is also used for Le Sentier Cathare. Then take the Chemin de la Triolle to the right, leading to the exit of the village. The road leads along vineyards and passes into a narrow path surrounded by scrubland (garrigues) and fragrant pine trees, and then follow a footpath for a few hundred meters before turning left onto the Plateau Vabina. The progress will work well, the landscapes are amazing and soon one after another appears by following the path. Pastoral history shows itself well, which has to be placed in the context of time and seems to be well-helped by the idyllic landscape...

Le Sentier Cathare

Le Sentier Cathare - Port-La-Nouvelle to Foix

Through the department of Aude and through, enables the Cathar Trail hike (or bike) combining the beauty of the landscape, visiting several Cathar castles and athletic relaxation. History and Geography are two inseparable matters when it comes to the Cathar Trail. Put your foot on the Cathar Trail, and you'll be transported 8 centuries ago, in a rich History environment, without the use of a time machine, just by using your feet! The success of the book and movie of the Da Vinci Code has fed a new awakening of interest in the Languedoc and its fabulous Cathar castles. These 'Castles in the Sky', perched on their vertiginous rock pinnacles, are some of the last remnants of the ill-fated Cathar 'heretics' and the legends that linked them to the Holy Grail...

Auberge
du Vieux Puits

Auberge du Vieux Puits - Fontjoncouse

If you love excellent food and wine, then there can be no finer restaurant in the South of France as Auberge du Vieux Puits. This 3 star Michelin restaurant is run by the celebrated French chef, Gilles Goujon. I can not recommend this restaurant highly enough. The food, the service, the wine, the cheese . . . all were excellent. Nobody has given Gilles Goujon anything for free. On the contrary. In a bucolic atmosphere far from the mundane noise, in an austere building –sold by the tiny Town Hall– he has been progressively restoring for a decade, he has been able to captivate plenty of customers and reach the top of the French guides: 5 hats in Gault Millau and 3 stars in Michelin. We can say we are before a self-made man who had to fight and sweat blood to reach fame; a fame very few chefs deserve so clearly...
