Valras Plage - Narbonne

Valras beach is one of Languedoc's big 'town beaches' like Narbonne, Canet and Palavas. It's certainly bustling, with plenty of tacky postcard shops and ice cream stalls.

The beach itself is nice, with large wave-breakers having been built to stop erosion. This has created a number of 'beachlets' - smaller beaches separated by thin rock promontories. A good choice if you have kids, as ice cream and kiddie areas are never far, but not particularly beautiful or atmospheric.

Valras-Plage is a typical Southern France beach resort. Ringed with lots of decent restaurants, a harbour and plenty of shops, Valras-Plage also offers you plenty of things to do when you want a break from the beach. This South of France beach has clean, warm water and the beach itself is well maintained.

The wide open expanse of sand at Valras-Plage, France, comfortably accomodates large numbers of holiday makers, allowing you enough room to spread out and relax. There is also plenty to do after the beach with lots of restaurants, boutiques and ice cream stalls. During the summer there is also a childrens adventure park and fairground rides just by the harbour.
The 4 km beach at Valras-Plage is not everyone’s favourite – some cite that the modern resort developments along the beach are ugly and other say that it gets too busy for their liking, but actually the beach is really good.

This wide swathe of sand at the estuary of the River Orb offers plenty of sporting facilities, including beach volleyball and football and the tourist office can provide you with a list of activities you can join.

There are lifeguard services during the summer season, a crèche for children over 3 years old, and a rental places for jet skis, catamarans, motorboats, parascending and pedalos. You can also spend a lovely couple of hours on a boat trip on the River Orb.

There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafés and ice cream parlours to choose from, and on Mondays and Fridays there is a local produce market to enjoy.

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

The Grapes

The Grapes

There are thousands of grape varieties contributing to a vast array of different wine styles with each variety having its own distinct flavours and characteristics. Varieties can be made uniquely to make a wine, in whch case the wine is known as a varietal, or collectively with other varities, when the wine is known as a blend. The soils and ‘terroirs’ in the Aude area are very varied, from Schist, Sandstone, Marl, Gravel, Pebbles, Limestone, to Granit and Alluvial soil; thus making many marvelous and different styles of wine. Also in this massive area are many different grape varieties, the reds include Carignon, Cinsault, Granache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The whites, Chardonnay, Granache blanc, Picpoul, Marsanne, Roussanne, Vermantino, Mauzac, Chenin and Clairette...

Oppidum d'Ensérune - Nissan-lez-Ensérune

Come and visit the archaeological site of Ensérune lying ten kilometres from Béziers between the Languedoc garrigues and the shores of the Mediterranean, and discover one of the most important Gaulish villages in the South of France. The Oppidum d'Ensérune is an ancient hill-town (or oppidum) near the village of Nissan-lez-Ensérune, France, located between Béziers and Narbonne close to the D609 (formerly RN9) and Canal du Midi.  The fields at Montady, below the Oppidum was the swamp of Montady, which is now wedge shaped fields separated by irrigation ditches that converge in the centre. In the 13th century, the swamp was drained; the ditches allowed water to flow to the centre of the circular depression, from which it was conveyed through underground pipes several kilometres to the south. The drainage is still functional and remains in use...
