Valras Plage

Valras beach is one of Languedoc's big 'town beaches' like Narbonne, Canet and Palavas. It's certainly bustling, with plenty of tacky postcard shops and ice cream stalls.

The beach itself is nice, with large wave-breakers having been built to stop erosion. This has created a number of 'beachlets' - smaller beaches separated by thin rock promontories. A good choice if you have kids, as ice cream and kiddie areas are never far, but not particularly beautiful or atmospheric.

Valras-Plage is a typical Southern France beach resort. Ringed with lots of decent restaurants, a harbour and plenty of shops, Valras-Plage also offers you plenty of things to do when you want a break from the beach. This South of France beach has clean, warm water and the beach itself is well maintained.

The wide open expanse of sand at Valras-Plage, France, comfortably accomodates large numbers of holiday makers, allowing you enough room to spread out and relax. There is also plenty to do after the beach with lots of restaurants, boutiques and ice cream stalls. During the summer there is also a childrens adventure park and fairground rides just by the harbour.
The 4 km beach at Valras-Plage is not everyone’s favourite – some cite that the modern resort developments along the beach are ugly and other say that it gets too busy for their liking, but actually the beach is really good.

This wide swathe of sand at the estuary of the River Orb offers plenty of sporting facilities, including beach volleyball and football and the tourist office can provide you with a list of activities you can join.

There are lifeguard services during the summer season, a crèche for children over 3 years old, and a rental places for jet skis, catamarans, motorboats, parascending and pedalos. You can also spend a lovely couple of hours on a boat trip on the River Orb.

There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafés and ice cream parlours to choose from, and on Mondays and Fridays there is a local produce market to enjoy.

Sérignan-Plage

Sérignan-Plage - Sérignan

Like Portiragnes and Vendres, Serignan feels more remote and wild, with a grassy sand bank hiding the few buildings that sit behind the beach. You can just see Cap D'Agde in the distance and the etang (inland lake) borders the north end of the beach. The restaurant behind the sand bank offers simple meals. You can also rent miniature ponies for kids to ride on. Serignan is quite popular in summer - so gets crowded. To get to the nude beach, turn right at the Ranch St Jean just before you get to Serignan - and follow the signs. Serignan Plage is a popular South France beach destination for thousands of holiday-makers each year. Serignan Plage has a wild and natural look to the beach and offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy beach games. The beach is protected by wild sand dunes at the back, which gives the beach a lovely character. The beach has a wide exapnse of fine golden sand. There is a small naturist section at the far left of the beach (near the salt marshes), but otherwise this beach is frequented by families (many staying at the local camp sites) and workers clocking off work in nearby Beziers...

Oppidum d'Ensérune -
Nissan-lez-Enserune

Oppidum d'Ensérune - Nissan-lez-Ensérune

The Oppidum d'Enserune is an ancient hill-town (or Oppidum) near the village of Nissan-lez-Enserune, France located between Béziers and Narbonne close to the RN9 and Canal du Midi. Location: The settlement was occupied without interruption between the 6th Century BC and 1st Century AD, it's location being chosen presumably because it was a hill with good views over the coastal plain, being close to the Roman road Via Domitia, the Montady lake, and fertile agricultural land below. Below the Oppidum was the swamp of Montady, (centred on), which is now wedge shaped fields separated by irrigation ditches that converge in the centre. In the 13th century, the swamp was drained; the ditches allowed water to flow to the center of the circular depression, from which it was conveyed through underground pipes several kilometers to the south. The drainage is still functional and remains in use. There is a museum on the site which offers a display of some of the finds on the site, as well as giving more information about the fort and the field system...
