Officially ’one of the most beautiful villages in France’, Lagrasse is a small town nestled at the confluence of two valleys, and linked to the Benedictine abbey to which it owed its original prosperity by two graceful bridges spanning the river Orbieu.

It is said that a peasant plowing his field there, found a statue of the Virgin. Depositing the village and returning to work his plot, he miraculously found the same figure. A chapel was built to sanctify this miracle and attested in the twelfth century.

The devotion to Notre Dame de Carla remains from the Val de Dagne pilgrims who make the climb up the hill twice a year (the first Sunday of May and early September). Facing the chapel, the sheep was restored in 2006 at the initiative of an association "Amis de Notre Dame de Carla" and the support of local authorities. A Calvary erected on top of the hill, overlooking the gorge Alsou between the hills and the shell until Lauza Lacamp tray.
The cross Wrought iron is present in the work of an ironworker from Rieux en Val in 1953.

Between Carcassonne and Narbonne, Lagrasse is set in the Orbieu valley, in the Corbieres massif. The Orbieu river separates the abbey, rising over the left bank, from the village which spreads along the right bank and is listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France. The foundation charter of the Benedictine Abbey of Sainte Marie de l'Orbieu dates from the end of the 8th century, even if another building probably existed on the site before the Carolingian period. A 13th century manuscript, Philomena's legend, tells the story of the legendary foundation of this abbey. The monastery rapidly became prosperous, its lands used to spread as far as Spain during the 9th and 10th centuries. The political power of the Abbey was essentially revealed during the Crusade against the Abligensians : Benoît d'Aligan, Abbot of Lagrasse from 1224 to 1230, was often a mediator between the occupying and the occupied forces. It was he who finally obtained Carcassonne's submission to the king of France (1226). Of all the important abbots of Lagrasse, it is necessary to mention the reforming Abbot Auger de Gogenx, from 1279 to 1309, who carried out the construction of most of the medieval parts of the abbey. After enduring the troubled times of the 14th century, the Abbey became an important artistic centre during the 15th century under the authority of Abbot Pierre d'Abzac de la Douze. The commendam of 1502 and then the arrival of a Saint-Maur congregation in 1662 also encouraged intellectual activity. During the 18th century, Abbot Armand Bazin de Bezons instigated a new building period with the construction of the abbey palace and the cloister. At the French Revolution, the Abbey was sold in 2 parts, a separation that still exists today..

Lézignan-Corbières

Lézignan-Corbières

Lézignan-Corbières is a very active town, located along the main road between Narbonne and Carcassonne. The town has plenty of shops and cafés and so makes a good place to stop for a lunchtime visit. The main attraction, though, is the Wednesday market which is very large and packs the town with market stalls, people, odors (of the good sort) and activity. Lézignan-Corbières isn't a particularly attractive town, and we found the narrow streets of the "old town" rather dreary. The main church of Lézignan-Corbières, Eglise Saint-Félix, is an imposing structure. Declared an historical monument, it's located in the center of town and has a small park just beside. Market Wednesday The Wednesday market is a really big affair in Lézignan-Corbières. The market stretches around the south side of the old town, packing the main Cours de la République and most of the adjacent side-streets. There are very many clothes and food stalls, and all are popular. It was fun to observe which vendors had the best reputation by the bigger crowds packed around the more popular vegetable and food stands....

Pont de Ribaute

Pont de Ribaute

Gorges de Ribaute, a gorgeous swimming spot of limpid blue-green water teaming with fish and dragonflies, below reefs of rock pummelled by centuries of water. For those not tempted to bathe, watching the wildlife is equally enjoyable. The river Orbieu tumbles from the geological chaos of the central Corbieres, gradually warming up as it runs over sun-baked rocks, until it winds through the vine-covered hills of Lagrasse and Ribaute...

Up in the Corbières hills, which lead to the Pyrenees, the natural border between Spain and France, and no more than a 20-minute drive from the Cité of Carcassonne and equidistant between the villages of Montlaur and Monze and closest to the hamlet of Pradelles-en-Val, there is a most unexpected outpost of Italy. The farm, which is not that easy to see from the road, has long been called Bourdasso. The property it occupies is the former winemaking facilities and house of the previous owners but the Italian influence is now obvious. The men wear predominantly white with their shirts conspicuously outside their trousers; the main dining room is stylishly simple and clean; and most crucially, and unusually for this part of the world, there is not a mention of cassoulet or confit du canard on the menu. The wine list even carries 10 different Italian red wines...
