La Prise d'Alzeau

La Rigole, A La Prise d'Alzeau - Riquet's canal winds its way through the forest, providing an interesting course for a long walk or cycle ride.

There is a fantastic circular route which can begin outside the house in La Galaube following an old road through the forest which after a few kilometres crosses the canal where one can then join the canal path back towards the Prise.

The Prise d' Alzeau and the Mountain Canal in the very heart of the Montagne Noire, «the source of the Canal du Midi» provides an important supply of water. It wasn’t until the 17th century, when Pierre Paul Riquet identified and harnessed the power of the small mountain streams so that collectively they could be used to generate a supply of water to the Canal du Midi. Thus Pierre Paul Riquet completed his greatest work, taking water from its source here in the Montagne Noire for the Canal du Midi in order to finally link the Atlantic and The Mediterranean Sea. The Galaube dam is part of the water management system of the Montagne Noire near Carcassone in Southern France. Reservoirs at the Saint Ferréol, Lampy and Cammazes dams already hold more than 35 million cubic metres of water for use as drinking water, irrigation in the three departments of Aude, Haute-Garonne and Tarn as well as regulating water levels in the Canal du Midi...

Saissac

Saissac

The Château de Saissac is a ruined Cathar castle in the southernmost tip of the commune of Saissac in the Aude département in the north-west of Carcassonne, France. It was once the residence of the powerful vassal family of Trencavel. Today the ruins are protected as official historical monuments of France. Saissac is mentioned in a legal document (an Acte) from the Abbey of Montolieu in 958, and again in a text of 960. The village is typical of the Black Mountains and is built between the ravines of the rivers Aiguebelle and Vernassonne, just above their confluence. Things to see in the village include the porte d'Autan, a lavoire built in granite, a second covered lavoire and a fine echauguette. Vestiges of the city walls (enceinte) are still visible around the ancient village. These walls date from the Fourteenth century, the same period that the castle of Saissac was restored...

La Coopérative - Musée Cérès Franco

La Coopérative - Musée Cérès Franco - Montolieu

8 km from Carcassonne, in Montolieu, a book village, La Coopérative (former village wine cooperative restored as an art center) hosts the impressive collection of brut, naive, unique and expressionist art gathered by Cérès Franco. Since 2015, the Cérès Franco Collection has been housed in an exceptional setting: the former wine cooperative cellar of Montolieu. Resolutely international, the Cérès Franco Collection brings together around 2,000 works from the 20th and 21st centuries, some of which are presented each year on a different theme. Brazilian and European naivety, South American popular art, art brut, self-taught, singular, artists from the CoBra movement or the New Figuration, the provenance of the works reflects an eclectic and independent taste for an art situated on the fringes of the major artistic currents...

Musée des Arts et Métiers du Livre

Musée des Arts et Métiers du Livre - Montolieu

Just 17 kilometres north-west of Carcassonne, perched on a rocky outcrop between the Dure and Alzeau gorges stands Montolieu, village of books. For the past 20 years, all year round, its second-hand and antiquarian bookshops have been welcoming visitors who are keen readers and book lovers. The Museum of Book Arts and Crafts is open throughout the year and offers a fascinating journey through the history of books, from the earliest writing and developments in writing media, right down to the invention of printing. Entering Montolieu, the magic begins. In the 18th century, Montolieu, a picturesque medieval village perched on a rocky spur between the Dure and Alzeau gorges, and the surrounding villages experienced economic prosperity with the textile and paper industries. Many mills were fed by the sometimes capricious rivers that flowed down from the Black Mountain. The rural exodus of the 19th century signalled the decline of the paper industry, the royal cloth factory and the agricultural and wine-growing industries. In the 1980s, a man, Michel Braibant, a bookbinder in Carcassonne, dreamt of reviving deserted alleyways...
