Randonnée Le Somail - Le Somail

A beautiful signposted walking tour in and around Le Somail, that takes in all the sights

Le Somail is a large village that exists thanks to the Canal du Midi. This port was built as a stop for the trade and immediately enjoyed a great prosperity. Today it is one of the most beautiful spots of the Canal du Midi, with la Chapelle, le Pont, la Maison d'Éclusier and much entertainment that it has inspired and attracted many artists.
Randonnée Le Somail - Le Somail
We had been told about it and had seen a photo of the pretty stone bridge spanning the Canal du Midi. And it is when we reach the banks and advance toward the heart, the port, that we understand the wonder in the eyes who had insisted we come here.

Here everything stops suddenly, everything comes to a halt on arrival as if the Canal du Midi would immediately hypnotize us into taking on its rhythm, serene, calm.

The place is calm and has been since its construction 300 years ago, at the same time as the Canal du Midi. At the time it served as a “staging-post”, an inevitable stop on the long and tiring trips of the day.
Its lodgings welcomed all the travellers passing through and is still there, next to the stone bridge and a chapel of the same age. The place already has some visitors on this early spring day, all of them in the same state of mind as that of the canal, that of the lapping of the river boats in the water and the little boats chartered by the first tourists, that of strolls along the towpaths.

Pretty terraces call to us to spend a contemplative moment, to relax. "It's beautiful here," said the gentleman with a hat sitting for the past hour on the bridge. Happy inhabitant of this place out of time, his smile says a lot about the benefits of this delicious atmosphere. We are on foot and in need of nothing else to discover the incredible shop for old books and never leave, or escape along the canal. We feel very well, like we’re on an island, we have absorbed the rhythm and we would like to wander until evening and enjoy the gentle air.

The icehouse: built after 1684, it was used to store in winter and to store until the summer, large blocks of ice coming from the Montagne Noire, which were stored deeply after isolating them with straw.

Le pont en dos d'âne: this bridge called "de Riquet" or "du Somail" is remarkable for its basket vault, characteristic of this time of the inauguration of the Canal du Midi.

La chapelle: erected between 1684 and 1693, was enlarged in 1842. It could accommodate the 180 inhabitants of Somail, the bosses and crews stationed in the port and the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside. A mass was said at the arrival and departure of each bark of post. At present, a Mass is celebrated every Friday.

Minervois

A.O.P. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

The travelers used these stops to get from one city to travel to the other, a much easier way than an overland journey. At each gate they had to transfer to another boat. Loaded like mules they had upstairs and downstairs...
