Le Pont de Répudre - Paraza - Ventenac-en-Minervois

Le Pont de Répudre, a historical work par excellence, it is near the village of Paraza, in a beautiful natural setting. This is the first canal bridge built in France, the second in the world.

It is the only one built by Riquet, the others having been built later, most by Vauban. Travelers stopped to see the unusual sight while boats passing over a bridge.

Le Pont de Répudre - Paraza - Ventenac-en-Minervois

The canal bridge, begun in 1676, has held 400 people on its site. The amount of gravel carried by the torrent still show the need to cross the river under the Channel.

In the middle of the façade, a marble plaque placed in the last century by the heirs of Paul Riquet recalls that he was the inventor. The bridge arch which was damaged during floods in December 1999 has been beautifully repaired. A magical place!
Paraza is a canal town, built on the prosperity of trade and wine, set on a hill that overlooks the Aude Valley, and on a clear day one can see the Pyrenees, and the Mediterranean.

The town sits alongside the Canal du Midi, an architectural and engineering achievement built in the 18th Century to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, now busy with tourist boats and barges.

Ventenac-en-Minervois is a delightful, peaceful and friendly village with just over 500 inhabitants. Surrounded by vineyards and situated on a low ridge beside the Canal du Midi, there are wonderful views in all directions from around the outskirts of the village.

A doorway in Château Ventenac’s dining hall opens out next to the 13th century church and the village square is within a minute’s walk. The Canal du Midi is a few steps from the Château Ventenac’s garden gate, whilst the wine Cave, the village’s two restaurants and boulangerie are all within 100 metres.

Minervois

A.O.C. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Château de Paraza - Paraza

A.O.C. MinervoisIn the Languedoc region, overlooking the outstanding Canal du Midi (UNESCO), the Château de Paraza represents the guardian of an ancestral winemaking tradition. Its history is intimately linked to the history of France, most particularly which of the Languedoc region, and to its very rich past and historical remains dating back to the Roman occupation. Under Louis the XIVth, the Château of Paraza served as a base for the engineer Pierre Paul Riquet during part of the building of the canal connecting the Mediterranean sea to the Atlantic Ocean, thus named “Canal du Roy” (Canal of the King). The Danglas family grow 65ha of vines on the hillsides of the village of Paraza. Their wines offer a harmonious dialogue between strength and finesse and their Grands Crus are appreciated worldwide. Overlooking the outstanding Canal du Midi (UNESCO), the Château de Paraza represents the guardian of an ancestral winemaking tradition. With friends or family, we welcome you for truly convivial and foody moments at the heart of our cellar...

Le Somail

Le Somail

Le Somail is a port on the Canal du Midi built in the seventeenth century. It’s near the town of Ginestas in the Minervois and these days is a rapidly expanding village. Originally it was a small hamlet around the port itself but today it’s something of a tourist attraction. Other attractions include a brightly-painted barge which is a floating grocery store and an amazingly huge emporium of second-hand and antique books. They profess to be able to get any book you’d like to order – and in any language. It’s quite fascinating watching the pleasure craft go by whilst eating on the banks of the canal. We finished our day by taking a little motor boat (it was a little motor, as well as a little boat…) for an hour. The peace and stillness of the Canal were lovely but we did also enjoy squinting into the portholes of some of the more luxurious boats moored along the banks…

L'Ô à la Bouche - Le Somail

L'Ô à la Bouche is located by the Canal du Midi in the small village of Le Somail, about 15 minutes from Narbonne. The restaurant has some tables right by the canal bank in a very picturesque spot. L'Ô à la Bouche offers a number of interesting set menus at different price ranges. The canal and the village offer a very nice stroll for after the meal, which makes it all the more memorable....

Le Moulin de l'Oulibo - L’Odyssée de l’Olivier

Le Moulin de l'Oulibo - L’Odyssée de l’Olivier - Bize Minervois

L'Oulibou is a fascinating place to visit. Only 3.5 km from Mailhac, it produces some award winning oils and olives which can be sampled in the very mill where they have been made. You can also see the whole process that olives go through in order to make them into a wide variety of oils. The 'lucque' is one of the main olives of the Languedoc Roussillon area and it under goes some magical transformation within the walls of this traditional mill. 2 kilometres from Bize, just off the main road between Beziers and Carcassonne, you will find l’Oulibo, a cooperative that produces some of the best olives and olive oils in France. Bize is part of the Minervois region that includes the village of Minerve 10kms to the north which was the site of a famous siege by Simon de Montfort and the consequent martyrdom of the Cathars. Nearby are Beziers (35 minutes) and Narbonne (25 minutes) with cathedrals, excellent markets, shops, museums, and much more...
