Le Pech de Bugarach

Shrowded in mystery, myth and legend, the peak of Mount Bugarach majestically dominates the wider area around Rennes-le-Château. Calmly looking upwards to the sky, the face of this dormant volcano was once believed to have been given the facial features of Christ by God himself when his only son was taken to the area. That is not the only legend in local folklore that surrounds this mountain.

What is fact is that it’s not just an ordinary mountain. It’s a geo-il-logical mountain. Illogical in the sense that the top of the mountain is millions of years older than the bottom. It’s lying upside down as a result of the massive geological forces that created the Pyrenees mountains.

A circular walk to Pic Bugarach starting and finishing in the village and passing the Cascade de Mathieux and La Fenêtre. You start on a section of Sentier Cathare/Cathar Way – a 250 km/ mile footpath which winds its way between Port-la-Nouvelle on the Mediterranean Coast and Foix, between a large number of villages and chateaux with strong links to the Cathars. After 2.5km/ 1.5miles from the village, the path passes above the Cascade des Mathieux. The waterfall cannot been seen from the path so look out for the small sign on your left. A real hidden treasure. As the path gets steeper, the trees thin and it becomes necessary to use your hands to scramble up the limestone. La fenêtre/ window is a natural opening in the limestone rock which the path passes behind. After more scrambling, the summit comes into view...
Very windy on the summit as is often the case here. My binoculars help identify the large bird of prey as a vulture. There is a 360° panorama. Not a particularly clear day so the views not as spectacular as they can be. To the north is the Montagne d'Alaric (30°). To the east two cathar castles – Peyrepertuse (88°) and Quéribus (98°) and the sea 60km away. To the south are the Pyrenees closest to the sea with the unmistakable outline of Pic Canigou (170°). To the west more of the Pyrenees with the Pic St Barthelemy (266°) and closer the hill top village of Rennes-le-Château (306°). While on the summit you will think about how according to some, the end of the Mayan calendar on 21st December 2011 means the end of the world! Except that is for those who are in the vicinity of Bugarach village which will escape the apocolypse apparently. As well as the end of the world, much has been written linking Pic Bugarach to hidden treasure, unidentified flying objects and strange lights etc. It is even said that it inspired Steven Spielberg and his film 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' although the actual peak in the film is based almost certainly on the Devils Tower in Wyoming. You will find an esoteric geometric pattern carved into the summit rock and later found an identical pattern carved into a large rock close to the descent path.

Le Sentier Cathare

Le Sentier Cathare - Port-la-Nouvelle /// Foix

Through the department of Aude and through, enables the Cathar Trail hike (or bike) combining the beauty of the landscape, visiting several Cathar castles and athletic relaxation. History and Geography are two inseparable matters when it comes to the Cathar Trail. Put your foot on the Cathar Trail, and you'll be transported 8 centuries ago, in a rich History environment, without the use of a time machine, just by using your feet! The success of the book and movie of the Da Vinci Code has fed a new awakening of interest in the Languedoc and its fabulous Cathar castles. These 'Castles in the Sky', perched on their vertiginous rock pinnacles, are some of the last remnants of the ill-fated Cathar 'heretics' and the legends that linked them to the Holy Grail...

Train touristique du pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes

Train touristique du pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes - Axat - Rivesaltes

The Cathar Fenouilledes country train runs along a railway between Rivesaltes in the Pyrenees Orientales ans Axat in Aude, dignified heritage from the City of the South and a radial relationship between Carcassonne and Rivesaltes. Along the way you can see numerous and remarkable works of art as it winds its way through valleys and tunnels: Flirting languidly with the rivers Agly and Aude, it reveals the rocky countryside, sprinkled with vineyards on the mountainside, dominated by many notables sites (The Catlar Castle at Queribus, The Tour of Far, the relay station of froça real...) before reaching the forest at the end of an audacious railway journey...

Le Jardin de la Sals - Sougraigne

Le Jardin de la Sals is located in the heart of lush greenery, in the small picturesque village of Sougraigne in the Haute Vallée de l'Aude, the territory of the Corbières Vertes. You will find wild and untouched nature and the starting point of a large number of hiking trails. Nicole and François welcome you to an old house from the 15th century, with a warm and family atmosphere. The establishment has existed for more than 35 years and was known under the name Ecluse au Soleil (Sluis = Ecluse). First in Chambre d’hôtes, then in a hotel with restaurant, labeled "Logis de France". We acquired the establishment in 2005 and have continued on the same path, striving for a formula that is less conventional than the hotel sector. Anxious to offer a less conventional welcome than the hotel sector, we also wanted to reduce our activity, improve our services and integrate the living forces of the village (beekeepers, breeders, gardeners, etc.)...

Atelier Verrier Forestier

Atelier Verrier Forestier - Sougraigne

At Sougraigne on the Domaine de l'Eau Salée, the Sals gushes forth, a salt spring with up to 60g of salt per litre, and which historically has attracted many protagonists: glass makers, jet miners, charcoal burners, woodcutters, shepherds, pedlars and of course, salt smugglers and the customs officers on their heels. The Salines forest glassworks is a remarkable archaeological site not far from this spring, with the remains of its two heating structures being particularly well preserved: a melting furnace more than 6 metres long, with a double hearth. These furnaces operated from the mid-seventeenth to the mid-eighteenth century. The site was formerly frequented by many different characters: Glass makers, jet miners, charcoal burners, wood cutters, shepherds, peasant farmers, peddlers, plus of course the salt smugglers and the tax officers of the Ferme Générale trying to catch them. You can reach the Domaine via various footpaths from the surrounding villages, set in beautiful scenery full of surprises...

Le Jardin de Marie

Le Jardin de Marie - Rennes-le-Château

Set in the heart of Cathar country, at the centre of the Mystery of Rennes-le-Chateau, the Jardin de Marie has been serving those on a quest, journey or even just the hungry for many years. For many, the mystery of Rennes-le-Château is one that has yet to be explained. This mystery focuses upon the story of Father Bérenger Saunière, the humble priest who changed the course of Rennes-le-Château's fortunes forever. Our restaurant is set in his and his housekeeper's, Marie Dénarnaud, garden, the Jardin de Marie. In these gardens you will meet Morgan Marrot who has taken over the restaurant in recent years and in 2019, renovated the space to give a modern yet rustic feel. Come and visit Morgan and the team as we delight you with our South-Western cuisine...
