Randonnée Le Chateau de Puilaurens

This castle is located at an altitude of almost 700 metres and overlooks the village of Lapradelle, in the midst of a pine forest. The first records of the castle date from 958. Since it played a major part in defending the former frontier between France and the kingdom of Aragon, it can boast the full range of medieval military architecture. Access is via a pathway with chicanes preceded by a barbican.
Randonnée Le Chateau de Puilaurens
The Château de Puilaurens (Occitan: lo Castèl de Puèg-Laurenç) is one of the Cathar Castles of the Languedoc in what is now the South of France. It is located in the commune of Lapradelle-Puilaurens in the Aude département. The castle here had belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuxa before it was acquired by the King of Aragon in 1162. As Aragonese property it was outside the territory ravaged by the Crusaders during the Cathar wars. Like Queribus it therefore provided a refuge for those fleeing from the invading forces. Those who took refuge there included both Cathars and faidits, that is to say those who had forfeited their property because of their opposition to the invaders. These faidits included high nobles, such as Guillaume de Peyrepertuse.
A Pays Cathare Castle with imposing walls, Puilaurens, like a lord, looks towards the Pic du Canigou and oversees the centuries. To reach this "son of Carcassonne", brother of Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Terms and Aguilar, it took us an hour by car from the medieval city of Carcassonne, but the journey seemed shorter as the setting is enchanting. It begins by following the Aude in its course through the valleys of vineyards to Limoux. The landscape then rises gradually until Alet les Bains, becomes covered with woods, and then gives way to the cliffs of the Défilé de Pierre Lys. We are in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in Axat, ready to dive into the pine forests that surround the Castle Puilaurens. All senses awakened, we walk through a botanical path that climbs through the woods towards the castle. We enjoy the aromas and scents of the plants of the region. From here, the lord of the place is invisible, but from the village of Lapradelle and its surroundings, one can see its imposing ramparts, intact. A stone stairway invites us to follow it, it zigzags to the foot of the walls, leading us to the majestic gateway. The walls still draw a circular path and allow us to mentally reconstruct them, through this window on the past, the dungeon and the four towers. Inside, the spacious courtyard impresses us again with these volumes unimaginable from below.

Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet | Agly Fenouillèdes

This Mediterranean village in the south of France, its vineyards nestled between sea and mountains, stands on the road to the Cathar castles. St Paul enjoys the privilege of being irrigated by two rivers the Agly and the Boulzane. They have dug their way through the last strong holds of the Corbières mountains creating two natural wonders: The Gorges de Galamus (North) suitable for canyoning etc and The Clue de la Fou (South) with its Via Ferrata. An old Roman town, St. Paul, main centre for the Canton, is home to an architectural curiosity namely the chapel which is an ancient collegiate dating from the thirteenth century, and rebuilt in the seventeenth century. In its tradition winemaking and industry, St Paul is moving gradually towards green tourism and outdoor sports, taking advantage of its unique environment...

Put your foot on the Cathar Trail, and you'll be transported 8 centuries ago, in a rich History environment, without the use of a time machine, just by using your feet! The success of the book and movie of the Da Vinci Code has fed a new awakening of interest in the Languedoc and its fabulous Cathar castles. These 'Castles in the Sky', perched on their vertiginous rock pinnacles, are some of the last remnants of the ill-fated Cathar 'heretics' and the legends that linked them to the Holy Grail...
