Randonnée La Forêt de Rialsesse - Arques
Departure from the church of Arques. This route offers a breathtaking panorama from the two main peaks of the forest Rialsesse where you can see the lake from Arques. This forest in the Corbières Oriental is state-owned and covers 8 municipalities. Nestled in a forest of more than 2 000 hectares, situated in the hollow of the Corbières, on the edge of Razes and Termenès on the road of the castles of Cathar country, the village of Arques offers visitors its rich history and the beauty of nature that surrounds it. Arques exceptional views of the valley and the hills surrounding it with the south, Pech Bugarach and west, the chain of Oriental and Ariege Pyrenees.
Arques is the village which saw the birth of Déodat Roché (1877-1978), the historian of Catharism.

Deodat Roche, founder of the Cahiers d'Etudes Cathares and a twentieth-century magistrate of Limoux and Carcassonne who was removed from his position by the Vichy government for his interest in religion and spirituality, wanted to lay bare to his contemporaries the light which the Cathars had tried to reveal to the medieval world.

The settlement of Arques is located about fifty kilometres south-east of Carcassonne.

Its castle, standing on an isolated mound, consists of a rectangular bailey with a Gothic gateway and an elegant keep that rises to a height of 24 metres, flanked by four turrets.

After looking at the castle, you may continue your tour with a visit to the centre of the village, where the Cathar Museum, known as the house of Déodat Roché, pays homage to one of the earliest historians of Catharism.....

Alet Les Bains

Rennes les Bains

Rennes-le-Château

Rennes-le-Château

Rennes-le-Château, January 24, 1917: A few people are standing in the small churchyard in Rennes-le-Chateau, watching silently as the coffin of Berenger Sauniere is lowered into his grave. Of these people, how many truly know the secret that is being buried with this charismatic priest? This question was not of much interest to anyone for the 50 years that followed the burial; yet when the story was rediscovered in the 1960s, it awoke the curiosity of many people both in France and abroad. From then on the phenomenon only increased, and led to the writing of many books (some more reliable than others), but unfortunately no solution has ever been found to explain the mystery of Sauniere's sudden wealth...

Rennes les Bains

Rennes les Bains

In the early days in the Corbières at Rennes-les-Bains, when people were converted they were baptised. This was an essential major ceremony of the new Christianity and had the character of a covenant with God. Baptism washed away sin so one could begin a new life in which salvation and personal enlightenment were assured. Baptisms were whole body immersions and Mary was authorised to perform baptisms, unlike most women of the time. . . . complete immersion, including the hair, was the norm and among the observers, fellow Christians waiting to welcome the newcomer to the fold, one of them was appointed to ensure this complete immersion. The newcomer had to be completely naked. Then he or she was welcomed lovingly, with hugs and kisses, into the new Christian community. Where, 2,000 years ago in the region of Rennes-les-Bains, were there suitable places for whole body baptism? Just outside the town is the Fontaine d'Amours – lover's spring. If you bathe there together, your love will last forever. It's the tiniest mental leap here, from romantic love to everlasting and spiritual love. Did this legend come from the baptism, done in the new loving religion, that took place there, after which people hugged and kissed?..

Bugarach

Bugarach

Shrowded in mystery, myth and legend, the peak of Mount Bugarach majestically dominates the wider area around Rennes-le-Château. The farming village is in the region of the Cathar castles, situated on spectacular rocky outcrops. Regarded as heretics by the Catholic Church, Cathars sought refuge in these castles in the 13th century when Pope Innocent III launched a full scale crusade against them. The village lies next to the Pic de Bugarach, a rocky peak which, at 1230 metres, is the highest point of the Corbières range of hills. The peak is dwarfed however by the nearby Pyrenees and offers splendid views of the range. Made of limestone with galleries of caves beneath it, the peak is a geological oddity, since its top layers are millions of years older than its bottom ones, making it an 'upside down mountain'. The peak of Bugarach has been shrouded in mystery, with various claims that it houses aliens in cavities beneath the rock. The internet abounds with tales of the late President François Mitterrand being curiously heliported onto the peak, of mysterious digs conducted by the Nazis and later Mossad, the Israeli secret services. There is talk of the area, near to the Cathar castles, holding the Holy Grail or the treasure of the Templars. A visit to Bugarach is said to have inspired Steven Spielberg in his film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind – although the actual mountain he used is Devil's Tower in Wyoming...

Le Jardin de la Sals

Le Jardin de la Sals - Sougraigne

Le Jardin de la Sals is located in the heart of lush greenery, in the small picturesque village of Sougraigne in the Haute Vallée de l'Aude, the territory of the Corbières Vertes. You will find wild and untouched nature and the starting point of a large number of hiking trails. Nicole and François welcome you to an old house from the 15th century, with a warm and family atmosphere. The establishment has existed for more than 35 years and was known under the name Ecluse au Soleil (Sluis = Ecluse). First in Chambre d’hôtes, then in a hotel with restaurant, labeled "Logis de France". We acquired the establishment in 2005 and have continued on the same path, striving for a formula that is less conventional than the hotel sector. Anxious to offer a less conventional welcome than the hotel sector, we also wanted to reduce our activity, improve our services and integrate the living forces of the village (beekeepers, breeders, gardeners, etc.)...
