Naturism in the Languedoc

What is Naturism?

Ask 100 people and you get 100 different answers. Whilst there is no official definition, it could be said: "Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature, expressed by communal nudity with the aim of furthering the respect of oneself, of others and that of the environment."

Others describe naturism as "a sensible approach to wearing clothes". Naturists come in all shapes and sizes and of all ages – from the newly-born to those over 80.

Many of us are interested in sports or outdoor living but others prefer just to relax. We are labourers, managers, clerks, civil servants, artists, farmers, doctors, etc.: we represent all walks of life. By undressing, you strip yourself of any false attitudes and of any outward signs of your social position in daily life. Without clothes, the employee is on the same level as the boss, and for many this turns out to be one of the most beneficial elements of Naturism.

Naturists are also more relaxed about the human body. We are more aware than others that human beings are born with soft skin which wrinkles later in life, that some are fat, others thin, some are tall, others short; having been struck by illness or accident, some remain scarred for life – we are simply men and women. Naturists don’t worry about how they are made – they prefer to let their true personality radiate.

We have in common our deep love of nature and the respect of all beings and things.
What then is a naturist? Probably someone just like you and us.

Naturist beaches

"A way of life in harmony with nature characterised by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and for the environment."

Naturist beaches
Le Cap d'Agde
Cap d'Agde
  - Quartier naturiste

The beach of Cap d'Agde forms part of Europe's largest nudist colony, and is actually one of the nicest beaches in Languedoc. Long and wide, it offers fine sand and, if you walk far enough down it, freedom from buildings. Behind most of the beach are sand dunes. Official entrance to the complex and beach is €5 per person, but you can get to the beach by going to Marseillan beach and walking 10mins to the south. The beach really is 100% nude, and the further reaches (and dunes) have been known to offer evening sex shows - replete with gawking spectators.

Sérignan Plage has all the facilities you need for a family holiday and more besides. There is the gigantic outdoor lagoon pool, complete with waterslides and shallow pools for the little ones. For those looking to relax, there is a waterspa fitness centre, which is free for our customers, offers a unique spa experience, with its hydromassage whirlpool and underwater massage path.
And for those who wish to take an early or late summer holiday there is a small indoor pool. There is a fun miniclub for younger family members and disco (which is sound proofed), arcade games and waterslides for older children. You’ll also find a wealth of sports for adults, including aerobics and boules, as well as a typical Provencal restaurant, a candle-lit terrace by the bar and a broad sandy beach, with a naturist section close by.

Gruissan beaches

Plage Mateille, Plage Vieille Nouvelle, Plage des Ayguades, Plage des Chalets, Plage des Salins, Plage du Grazel

Very long, very wide, very flat - Beach Mateille would probably be perfect for sand sailing. But as a beach to sit on, it just feels a little too big and flat and open, without much atmosphere and any interesting views. That said, it's large enough to promise a certain degree of privacy.

Gruissan - Plage des Ayguades

Gruissan is a seaside resort village with a ruin on top of a hill above the village itself. Its beach is really a continuation of the massive, wide stretches of sand that start at St Pierre. Like Narbonne and Mateille, it is extremely flat and wide, and feels very open. It does benefit from being further from the ugly buildings of Narbonne Plage, and is right next to a popular sailing port, where you can rent wind surfers.

St Pierre la Mer - St Pierre sur Mer

St Pierre la Mer

St Pierre la Mer and St Pierre sur Mer are one in the same village, but like its double name it has a split personality to match. As its name suggests it is on the Mediterranean sea with 8km of fine sandy beaches. Nestled in the La Clape region which is limestone cliffs and state protected garrigue lands interspersed with wineries. You have to drive 17 km through La Clape to get to St Pierre la Mer and its little neighbour Narbonne-Plage. In this drive you will see wilderness of wild thyme and rosemary, scrubland, olive trees and pines that are in their native habitat along the windy, twisty and quite dangerous roads. During the summer St Pierre La Mer becomes a thriving beach resort town of more than 100,000 people!
The resort of Saint Pierre la Mer, with its fishing port of Cabanes de Fleury, has more than 5 miles of fine sandy beach and offers a wide range of sports. Main central point of the resort: the market- one of the biggest market in the Languedoc Roussillon- welcomes a lot of visitors every morning. A little further, you will find a naturist area on the beach.

Port la Nouvelle

Port la Nouvelle

Port la Nouvelle is a popular beach area in the summer season, home to approximately 5,000 residents, and nude sunbathing is a welcome lifestyle. There are lots of cafés and restaurants all along the sea front, if all that sunbathing makes you ravenous. In the market square, there is a very small fairground and some snack stalls with live entertainment in the evenings. But definitely put clothes on if you are going to venture from the beach....

Argelès sur mer - Plage du Bocal du Tech
Argelès sur mer - Plage du Bocal du Tech

With a welcoming atmosphere, the beach at Argèles-sur-mer is seven kilometres wide with clear waters that mirror the Argèles Mountains. Though nudity is welcome, if you are looking for a bit of privacy or merely testing out the nudist lifestyle, simply lie down near the coves of Portells and Ouille, which link the rocky coast to the main beach.

Torreilles Plage

Torreilles Plage

Torreilles (Pyrénées Orientales, Languedoc Roussillon) Here you can spend a quiet holiday by the beach in this authentic Catalan village by the ruggedly maintained coast. You will discover the ranch-style surroundings and the bareback horse rides by the beach as well as numerous water activities or lazing on the naturist and family beaches... sun, sand, pool and horse rides, not to forget tapas restaurants on the beach. Found 10 km from Perpignan and 30 km from the Spanish border...

Naturist Campsites

Naturist Campsites
Naturism, is the practice of going unclothed in social and usually mixed gender groups. It sometimes occurs in secluded places in countries where appearing naked in public is illegal. Those who practice naturism are called naturists. While some believe that being naked with other people is always sexual, or that nudism is morally wrong or pornographic, naturists reject these views, arguing that nudism is a natural state.

Typical naturist activities are relaxation, hiking, camping, sunbathing, and many other outdoor sports. naturists prefer to be nude, whenever the temperature and the social situation allows it (including when one is alone). Naturism (pronounced "nature" + "ism") should not be confused with naturalism, the study of nature!
To help you familiarize yourself somewhat with this region, we have compiled a list of campsites in the department of Aude (See below and right)!
We hope you will be as appreciated as much as we did!
Naturist Villages
Naturism is a modern movement which promotes respect for oneself, for others and for nature. It focuses on two fundamental notions - harmony with nature and group nudity. By emphasising a complete separation between nudity and sexuality, it gives nudity a convivial and liberating quality. Being nude in a group with others in unspoilt natural surroundings is a way of releasing complexes and accepting differences, even handicaps.

Naturist villages have striven to develop the spirit of naturism for those who love holidays in harmony with nature, by promoting self respect and respect for others in a protected environment.

Naturist Villages
Aphrodite Village Sogenat

Aphrodite Village Sogenat

The naturist villages of Aphrodite and Club Oasis are in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of the South of France and offer a complete contrast to the hustle and bustle of the more commercialised resorts. They are an oasis of tranquillity: no through traffic (cars must be left in special parking areas), no regular discos, an uncrowded wide sand and shingle beach, and a family atmosphere. As nude lifestyle resorts, nudity is encouraged at all times and is obligatory (weather permitting) during the day. Aphrodite is a self-contained village, comprising a self-service store, restaurant, take-away, boutique for souvenirs and beach articles, newsagents and laundry. There are also card-operated international phone boxes. The shops are open from early June to mid September. A post office, further shops and bistros can be found open year-round in the old village of Leucate, some 6.5km away..

Cap d'Agde Naturist Village
In the evenings, the area abounds in a wide choice of entertainment, ranging from restaurants and musical events to an amusement park and discotheques at an adjacent entertainment centre. For nature-lovers, there is a picturesque almost untouched backland with unforgettable day trips, hiking and canoeing. This route goes straight through the region and shows the charm of the area: 32 vineyards, wine cellars, fish farms, mussel and oyster breeders, farms, and a highly awarded chocolate producer, all of which will tempt you to try out their traditional locally manufactured produce....

Eden Village
Eden Village

A perfect location, righton the beach, Eden-Village is a prestigious vacation holidays family. This village is located in an naturist area nearby Leucate, with family atmosphere. Eden Plage is situated directly on the beach
From the houses to the beach it's not even 50 meters. The beach itself is a nudist beach. Eden Plage is a "mixed" estate, you can thus run around naked within it's area, but you don't have to. But please do not feel uncomfortable to be surrounded by naked people. At the south part of the same beach there are a few estates, where nakedness is in effect obligatory, where people are less relaxed about the matter. If you have pubescent children which have problems with being naked, Eden Plage would be suitable. There is a normal "clothed" beach a small distance away (if you cross the bridge by the oyster farmers).
Village Naturiste Ulysse

Village Naturiste Ulysse

Just to the north of this custom built holiday playground are three naturist complexes - Ulysse, Aphrodite, and Oasis - all sign posted from the main N9 and all opening onto the wide golden sands of the beaches of the Mediterranean Golfe de Lyon. They have apartments and villas to rent, all set around delightful gardens, and the facilities you would expect from a specially built resort.

Plage Naturiste de Torreilles

Plage Naturiste de Torreilles - Torreilles

South Beach The longest and most natural beach in Torreilles part of which is reserved for naturism. Between Port Bacares and Canet-en-Roussillon. Access by D81. The access road to the beach is the very first right just beyond the roundabout. Follow this as it deteriorates into a dirt track but ends at a fine big car park right at the beach. Nice beach, just as you come off the roundabout to enter Torielles there is an information board stop and take a look to orientate yourself. Leucate Naturist Beach & Village

Leucate Naturist Beach & Village

You get to it by heading North up the D627 past Port Leucate. On the left is the etang where many sail-boarders go and before the bridge there is a right turning signed to Naturist Villages and the Centre Conchicole. After taking the turning there is a roundabout, turning right and next left after some newly built apartments brings one to a narrow bridge There is more parking to be found without crossing the bridge unless one is lucky, however it is only a short paved walk to the beach between two of the naturist 'villages'. ' Aphrodite' on the left has a restaurant on the beach and 'Oasis' has a pizza/cafe next to its swimming pool. Fresh water showers are available, and the beach is public and without wandering voyeurs. By the way us naturists prefer not to be called 'nudists' Turning left at the aforementioned roundabout brings the happy motorist to the third village called Ulysses, or to fishermens' cafes for the consumption of fresh shellfish!...

Sérignan-Plage - Sérignan

Like Portiragnes and Vendres, Serignan feels more remote and wild, with a grassy sand bank hiding the few buildings that sit behind the beach. You can just see Cap D'Agde in the distance and the etang (inland lake) borders the north end of the beach. The restaurant behind the sand bank offers simple meals. You can also rent miniature ponies for kids to ride on. Serignan is quite popular in summer - so gets crowded. To get to the nude beach, turn right at the Ranch St Jean just before you get to Serignan - and follow the signs. Serignan Plage has a wild and natural look to the beach and offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy beach games. The beach is protected by wild sand dunes at the back, which gives the beach a lovely character. The beach has a wide exapnse of fine golden sand. There is a small naturist section at the far left of the beach (near the salt marshes), but otherwise this beach is frequented by families (many staying at the local camp sites) and workers clocking off work in nearby Beziers...
