Lying at the intersection of various land and sea routes, the town was the centre of the region’s rapid commercial development.

Ceramics unearthed by excavations carried out since 1915 reveal the progressive intermingling of Celto-Iberian populations and Mediterranean civilisations...

The Oppidum d'Enserune is an ancient hill-town (or Oppidum) near the village of Nissan-lez-Enserune, France located between Béziers and Narbonne close to the RN9 and Canal du Midi.

Location:
The settlement was occupied without interruption between the 6th Century BC and 1st Century AD, it's location being chosen presumably because it was a hill with good views over the coastal plain, being close to the Roman road Via Domitia, the Montady lake, and fertile agricultural land below.

Below the Oppidum was the swamp of Montady, (centred on), which is now wedge shaped fields separated by irrigation ditches that converge in the centre. In the 13th century, the swamp was drained; the ditches allowed water to flow to the center of the circular depression, from which it was conveyed through underground pipes several kilometers to the south. The drainage is still functional and remains in use. There is a museum on the site which offers a display of some of the finds on the site, as well as giving more information about the fort and the field system..

Valras-Plage

Valras-Plage

Valras beach is one of Languedoc's big 'town beaches' like Narbonne, Canet and Palavas. It's certainly bustling, with plenty of tacky postcard shops and ice cream stalls. The beach itself is nice, with large wave-breakers having been built to stop erosion. This has created a number of 'beachlets' - smaller beaches separated by thin rock promontories. A good choice if you have kids, as ice cream and kiddie areas are never far, but not particularly beautiful or atmospheric. Valras-Plage is a typical Southern France beach resort. Ringed with lots of decent restaurants, a harbour and plenty of shops, Valras-Plage also offers you plenty of things to do when you want a break from the beach. This South of France beach has clean, warm water and the beach itself is well maintained. The wide open expanse of sand at Valras-Plage, France, comfortably accomodates large numbers of holiday makers, allowing you enough room to spread out and relax. There is also plenty to do after the beach with lots of restaurants, boutiques and ice cream stalls. During the summer there is also a childrens adventure park and fairground rides just by the harbour...

Narbonne

Narbonne

Narbonne, France is a charming small city in the Languedoc, featuring wonderful historic attractions as well as a relaxing beach along the Mediterranean. The heart of Narbonne, once a key port for the Roman Empire, is the dramatic Place de l'Hotel de Ville. Also be sure to stroll through the village’s old town, where you can’t miss the main attraction: Cathedrale Saint-Just. The most dominant building in this neighborhood, the 13th century church connects to the Palais des Archevêques, which has an ornately carved 130-meter keep. The Horreum, the only significant ancient Roman relic in the city, is an intricate underground series of hallways and tunnels which is believed to have been used for grain storage. Open year-round, it closes Mondays from October through May. Also of interest is the Musee de Telephone, with exhibits on the history of communications, including telegraphs and, of course, the telephone. Be sure to visit Narbonne Plage (beach), which you can reach from the train station and several points in central Narbonne through the 'TUN' bus line. The beach area features boutiques and outdoor cafés...

La Tulipe Noire

La Tulipe Noire - Fleury d'Aude

Jérôme loves the trade, after having worked in very nice restaurants, he settled with his wife in this small village near La Clape, between Béziers and Narbonne. His credo: treating his guests around a healthy and gourmet cuisine prepared with fresh products and offering dishes with unconcealed tastes and flavors. Rest assured, everything that comes out of his kitchen is beautiful and good. The address don't beat about the bush, it gets straight to the point: quality products, precise gestures, mastered cooking, juices perfectly made, subtly presented dishes and the young age of the chef to make you discover his cuisine halfway between terroir and modernity. At lunchtime, a formula is offered but you will fully become aware of Jérôme's talent on the menu. The dining room set in a redesigned former cellar where the old stones and the old tun that is used as wine cellar are still present. A very favorite address, a state of mind. A restaurant that keeps making people talk about it. New for 2020: the chef has his own vegetable garden!
