The collections of the Lapidary Museum are housed in the former church of Notre Dame de Lamourguier, the remains of a 13th-century Benedictine monastery and a fine example of Southern Gothic art.
Some 1,300 blocks of stone form one of the largest collections in Europe.
Most of them originate from Roman grave monuments which had been re-used as decoration for the town's ramparts (dismantled in the 19th century).
A half-hour sound and light show projected onto the walls of the church retraces the history of Narbonne from antiquity to the Renaissance.
You can buy a Pass Ticket, which is valid for 15 days and gives you entry to all the monuments and museums. |

Specialities
The Musée Lapidaire coming from the dismantlingof the ramparts of Narbonne ordered by Napoléon III, gathers in a disused church of Southern Gothic, a collection of about 1300 Gallo-Roman lapidary elements coming from ancient monuments of the Town. Studies undertaken in 1980 by the researchers of the Centre Camille Jullian (CNRS Aix en Provence) have successfully reconstructed parts of these ancient monuments.
Today, the Musée lapidaire of Narbonne invites you to an extraordinary journey to the heart of heritage through an audiovisual show. From the Roman period to the Renaissance, travel through Narbonne and the rest of the world, carried along a show of lights where images and music immerse you in History. The scenography was entrusted to Gianfranco Iannuzzi (www.gianfranco-iannuzzi.com ), multimedia artist and Art Director of the works of sound and light of the quarries of Baux de Provence « Cathédrale d’Images » ; he also created interactive shows for the Futuroscope of Poitiers and for several Italian towns such as Venice.
Massimiliano Siccardi, multimedia artist and videographer, has worked on the image and the soundtrack. He has developed a research and production activity integrating new technologies in areas such as image, sound and video...

Le massif de la Clape
|
The La Clape AOP is located where the Coteaux du Languedoc and Corbières appellations overlap and is well known for its vineyards that lie on a limestone outcropping that extends across the entire region. The region produces red, rose and white wines that are fully representative of the region and the reds show particularly well, often times considered a vin de garde. The majority of the wines of Gruissan are produced on the Clape. This little mountain, situated between Narbonne and Gruissan was an isle at the time of prehistoric man. The Clape, gets its name from the Occitan word « Clapas » meaning a pile of stones, and reaches a height of 214 m. The pine trees cover the slopes of the Clape. The garrigue covers the plateaux and the thyme, the rosemary and the lavender that invite you to promenade are what give the wines their character...

South and east of the city, the parc naturel régional de la Narbonnaise is 800 sq km of protected vineyards, lagoons, islands – and 50km of fine sand beaches. Gruissan, 20 minutes from Narbonne, is a fishing village on a hill between two lagoons, with narrow alleyways encircling the ruins of a 12th-century tower. A marina was added in the 20th century, with apartments, restaurants and berths for 1,300 boats.
Gruissan’s huge beach, over the Grazel lagoon, has a longer holiday history. In the mid-19th century, Narbonne families would head here in summer for a beach break before the hard work of the grape harvest, first sleeping in covered wagons, then in cabanes on stilts. The tradition was formalised in the 1920s when, in what might have been France’s first holiday park, the village bought a tract of foreshore from the state and built basic huts – still on stilts – for letting to local families.
Today’s chalets are more permanent, with running water and electricity, but the atmosphere remains laid-back and friendly as families barbecue in the spaces beneath their huts, and children run in and out...
