- daily life
More than 1,200 tools, machines and various objects have been restored.
More than 2000 years ago potters settled on the territory of the present-day commune of Sallèles.
For three centuries they produced en masse amphorae, tiles, bricks, pipes, crockery and oil lamps. |

How these potters of Antiquity lived and worked is shown in the museum that is built like a veritable bridge over the archaeological site where the dig was begun some 20 years ago.
In 1997, an exact replica of a gallo-roman kiln was built with identical materials and tools.
Indeed, the building in which it is housed was also built by artisans. So, there are now regular firings in this kiln...

Narbonne, France is a charming small city in the Languedoc, featuring wonderful historic attractions as well as a relaxing beach along the Mediterranean. The heart of Narbonne, once a key port for the Roman Empire, is the dramatic Place de l'Hotel de Ville. Also be sure to stroll through the village’s old town, where you can’t miss the main attraction: Cathedrale Saint-Just. The most dominant building in this neighborhood, the 13th century church connects to the Palais des Archevêques, which has an ornately carved 130-meter keep. The Horreum, the only significant ancient Roman relic in the city, is an intricate underground series of hallways and tunnels which is believed to have been used for grain storage. Open year-round, it closes Mondays from October through May. Also of interest is the Musee de Telephone, with exhibits on the history of communications, including telegraphs and, of course, the telephone. Be sure to visit Narbonne Plage (beach), which you can reach from the train station and several points in central Narbonne through the 'TUN' bus line. The beach area features boutiques and outdoor cafés...

A beautiful signposted walking tour in and around Le Somail, that takes in all the sights
Le Somail is a large village that exists thanks to the Canal du Midi. This port was built as a stop for the trade and immediately enjoyed a great prosperity. Today it is one of the most beautiful spots of the Canal du Midi, with la Chapelle, le Pont, la Maison d'Éclusier and much entertainment that it has inspired and attracted many artists. We had been told about it and had seen a photo of the pretty stone bridge spanning the Canal du Midi. And it is when we reach the banks and advance toward the heart, the port, that we understand the wonder in the eyes who had insisted we come here. Here everything stops suddenly, everything comes to a halt on arrival as if the Canal du Midi would immediately hypnotize us into taking on its rhythm, serene, calm. The place is calm and has been since its construction 300 years ago, at the same time as the Canal du Midi. At the time it served as a “staging-post”, an inevitable stop on the long and tiring trips of the day...

A new address in Le Somail, L'escale attracts freshwater sailors on a stroll along the Canal du Midi, but not only. It must be said that the address has enough to seduce with its beautiful sieved terrace in the evening and its room with a contemporary decoration. But the good surprise is also in the plates, Geoffroy, the chef, proposes a seasonal cuisine where local products mix with those from elsewhere... In summer, fans will appreciate the King crab and crab cakes, spicy avocado and lemon olives, the tuna tataki with three sesame seeds, the bull's keeper or the lamb's mouse. La Coopérative de L'Oulibo - L’Odyssée de l’Olivier |
 |
|
L'Oulibou is a fascinating place to visit. Only 3.5 km from Mailhac, it produces some award winning oils and olives which can be sampled in the very mill where they have been made. You can also see the whole process that olives go through in order to make them into a wide variety of oils. The 'lucque' is one of the main olives of the Languedoc Roussillon area and it under goes some magical transformation within the walls of this traditional mill. 2 kilometres from Bize, just off the main road between Beziers and Carcassonne, you will find l’Oulibo, a cooperative that produces some of the best olives and olive oils in France. Bize is part of the Minervois region that includes the village of Minerve 10kms to the north which was the site of a famous siege by Simon de Montfort and the consequent martyrdom of the Cathars. Nearby are Beziers (35 minutes) and Narbonne (25 minutes) with cathedrals, excellent markets, shops, museums, and much more...
