Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

The Grapes

The Grapes

There are thousands of grape varieties contributing to a vast array of different wine styles with each variety having its own distinct flavours and characteristics. Varieties can be made uniquely to make a wine, in whch case the wine is known as a varietal, or collectively with other varities, when the wine is known as a blend. The soils and ‘terroirs’ in the Aude area are very varied, from Schist, Sandstone, Marl, Gravel, Pebbles, Limestone, to Granit and Alluvial soil; thus making many marvelous and different styles of wine. Also in this massive area are many different grape varieties, the reds include Carignon, Cinsault, Granache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The whites, Chardonnay, Granache blanc, Picpoul, Marsanne, Roussanne, Vermantino, Mauzac, Chenin and Clairette...

Pézenas

Pézenas

Pézenas sits on the plains between the Haut (“Upper”) Languedoc National Park and the Mediterranean coastline. It is a mere twenty minutes from the clean sandy beaches of the Herault, half an hour from the beautiful rugged hill country inland and half an hour from what is surely one of the world’s most attractive cities – Montpellier. Pézenas has the feel of a small town with plenty of charm. Take a walk around the back streets and you will wander through medieval alleyways and squares bordered by tall elegant individualised houses replete with charm. There is a beautifully preserved Jewish ghetto settlement dating back to the middle ages, and the town is famed for being the dwelling place of French writer Moliere. Today there are still a number of writers who live locally...

Le Cirque de Mourèze

Le Cirque de Mourèze

Mourèze is in the Herault department of Languedoc-Roussillon, in the Massif Central 10 km west of Clermont-l'Herault and north of Pezenas. The village is visited for the natural spectacle that stands at its feet - the Cirque de Mourèze. The Cirque is an extensive natural amphitheatre (it covers almost 1000 acres / 300 hectares) of dolomites - dolomites are the hard upright rocks that remain standing when water and wind erosion has worn away the softer rock around them. The village of Mourèze itself, a small village of ancient houses centred around the 12th century gothic style Church of Sainte-Marie and with the ruins of a small ancient castle on a rock above the village, is in the heart of this picturesque setting and a pleasant village to stroll around. The Lac de Salagou, a few kilometres north of the Cirque de Moureze, is a popular lesisure lake for sunbathing, swimming and various water based activities...

Lac De Salagou

Lac De Salagou

The ‘Lac du Salagou’ (Salagou Lake) is an artificial lake with a surface area of nearly 2000 acres and a circumference of about 17 miles, not far from Clermont-l'Hérault. A major feature of the landscape in the department of Herault, Lake Salagou has been fashioned by a succession of geological events. Originally built to provide irrigation, the lake is now a leisure site and tourist attraction. Majestic red rocks (the so-called “ruffes”) tower above the waters, and there are great opportunities for mountain-biking, fishing, horse-riding and rambling. Stop off at La Lieude and discover the footprints left behind in the clay soil nearly 280 million years ago...
