The site of Tautavel Cave (also called Caune de l'Arago) is an ancient karst cave in the Tautavel valley of France with over 35 feet of deposits containing over 40 very old stratified occupations, dated between 450,000 and 100,000 years before the present.
Stone tools and faunal remains have been found in abundance.
The oldest layers include several bone and bone fragments of several individuals of the so-called Tautavel Man, called Homo erectus tautavelensis.
Archaeologist Henry de Lumley of the Institut de Paléontologie Humaine has been excavating the cave since 1964 and continues research today....

Specialities
The Arago cave is one of the largest karstic caves in the southern Corbières region.
The cave is located high up, overlooking the Tautavel Valley, and offering occupants an unparalleled view of the surrounding countryside.
This observation post was ideal for prehistoric hunters, who could watch the movement of game from on high.
In addition, the Verdouble River, flowing at the foot of the cliff, was a watering place where most animals came to drink - thus providing clear advantage to the hunters of Tautavel.
Near the former entrance to the cave, a path provided easy access to another hunting domain; the vast plateau, located above the cave.

Muscat de Rivesaltes is an appellation for the historic vins doux naturels from a relatively large area of Roussillon, in southern France, covering a total of 99 communes, and the majority of the Pyrenees-Orientales administrative departement. It is the largest single sweet wine appellation in France. Muscat de Rivesaltes wines are made predominantly from Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains and Muscat d'Alexandrie in varying ratios, according to the style desired by the individual producer. Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains is used to bring aromas of exotic and citrus fruits while Muscat d'Alexandrie brings a deeper bouquet of white flowers and ripe stone fruit. Collectively the wines show aromas of peach, lemon, mango and occasionally fresher, herbaceous notes like mint. These aromas all change with ageing, (which take place mostly in the bottle to preserve the fresher aromas) and the wines take on aromas of honey and baked stone fruits...

At the end of the Catalan world - because the border with Occitane is so close - the Can Fabre restaurant invites you to discover and enjoy the best culinary specialities of Catalonia. Jean-Philippe and his team are not kidding with quality and the notion of terroir. On many dishes, the origin is displayed: Mangalica ham, anchovies from Roque, Simmental entrecote... Cuisine from the sea or the land, simple, generous and local cuisine, but deliciously mastered. 'Monsieur knows his classics and knows how to treat us. Excellent service and a warm atmosphere are the other highlights of this restaurant. Can Fabre was born from a passion for cooking, welcoming friends and sharing good times. Jean-Philippe wanted to create the restaurant in which he would have dreamed of sharing a meal with friends or family... Mission accomplished!'

The Cathar castle Queribus in the south of France (located in the heart of the Corbieres) still stands today as an impressive memorial to the Albigensian crusade of the thirteenth-century. It was only in 1255 that this mountain top fortress fell to French Catholic knights. Queribus held out an additional eleven years beyond the more widely known Cathar castle at Montsegur, which gave Queribus the distinction of being the last of the Cathar castles. As a result, in many ways the capture of Queribus represents the end of the organized Cathar movement and is sometimes referred to as "the last bastion." Geographically, the castle is high and isolated. The exhausting hike up the mountain, a few hundred steep meters, that is necessary to reach the castle is rewarded by the stunniing military architecture of Queribus. The gothic style hall and its polygonal keep are especially worth seeing...
