Maison Eloi Merle - Olonzac

Maison Eloi Merle - Olonzac

Even with all the surrounding attractions of the Minervois valley, once you have settled in, you may not want to venture much further.

Our 100 year old residence is set in the middle of Olonzac and is adjacent to the municipal park, which once was part of this house!

The 3-storey mansion was originally built by a wealthy wine producer, Eloi Merle, and we have found many original records, bottles and photos of the Merle family, some of which are on display around the house.

All our rooms are en-suite with a shower or bath plus WC. 5 Gites available

They are for adult couples only, they are self-catering cottages, converted from 100 year staff quarters and stables.

They all have shower and toilet facilities, with their own 'Galley style' kitchenette. All gites are next to the pool!
  Specialities

In Olonzac, there are several Café Bars and Restaurants to choose from, as well as Pizzas to eat in or takeaway. Just a few minutes out of town is Lac de Jouarres, a beautiful lake used for fishing, boating, swimming and wind surfing or just a peaceful walk in the sun. Cycling is very popular, as there are many gently rolling roads and if you want to exert yourselves you can cycle in the hills - say to Minerve. But then it is downhill coming back! Fetes and Festivals happen all year round so remember to ask when booking!!

The gently rolling hills and vineyards of the Minervois, provides a stunning setting similar to nearby Provence, but without the crowds. The Mediterranean beaches are only 30 minutes away, and to the south lie the snow capped Pyrenees. Because this area is near Spain, there exists a wonderful blend of both French and Spanish cultures. The people are warm and friendly, the food and wine delicious. There always is a market or festival in a nearby village. Apart from the wine tasting, there are many sites of interest, like the city of Minerve, once the capital of Minervois. Carcassonne, a walled-in medieval city, Narbonne a great place for shopping,or relaxing by the Canal du Midi, or hire a boat! Across the border of Spain, visit the Dali Museum in Figueras or his home in the white-washed fishing village of Cadaques. Barcelona is but a few hours drive as well, with their tradition of Bull Fights

Minerve

Minerve has been selected as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
('The Most Beautiful Villages Of France').

Minervois

A.O.C. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Organic Wine

Organic Wine

The cornerstone of organic farming is the soil. Maintaining a healthy, biologically active soil is the main objective for an organic farmer. In the vineyard it means cultivating the soil and planting cover crops, instead of applying herbicides. It means using natural fertilizers, such as composted animal manure, versus chemical fertilizers. Organic growers use no synthetic growth-regulators (such as Alar). As for not using pesticides, the organic alternative is to encourage natural predators of insect pests instead of using poisonous insecticides. Organic farmers promote "biodiversity" and allow plants other than vines to grow in and around the vineyard. Biodiversity helps regulate the vineyard soil by attracting beneficial insects, spiders and predatory mites, as well as provide shelter and food (pollen, nectar and other bugs), and replaces the need for chemical pesticides or insecticides. What cannot be fully controlled through biodiversity can still be managed organically, through the use of naturally occurring plant or mineral extracts, which leave no residues in the soil. In wet climates the main difficulty is raised by the use of copper sulfate against mildew, which leaves over time levels of copper in the soil that need to be monitored....

La Curiosité de L'Auriol (Lauriole)

La Curiosité de L'Auriol (Lauriole)

The Curiosité de Lauriole is not a place where you can find something to buy or other interesting things, no it's really an insignificant piece of road with only an optical illusion. When we were there for the first time we looked everywhere for something special but did not find anything. After a little search on google we found an interpretation of this phenomenon. What you have to do to find the cache is just to find out the secret of the Curiosité de Lauriole. You can put your car at one of this coordinates and just set your gear in the free and leave the breaks... because of the optical illusion you will think the car goes that direction but it's not!!!
