Montolieu is a small, pretty village, which prides itself as being a 'village of books and graphic arts', and is a good place to browse through old books - there are perhaps 15 bokshops in the village, as well as a museum on the subject, and the possibility to learn about bookbinding. Stop anyway, even if you aren't interested in books, just for an amble around the village, in an attractive setting on a rocky outcrop between two rivers...

The Prise d' Alzeau and the Mountain Canal in the very heart of the Montagne Noire, «the source of the Canal du Midi» provides an important supply of water. It wasn’t until the 17th century, when Pierre Paul Riquet identified and harnessed the power of the small mountain streams so that collectively they could be used to generate a supply of water to the Canal du Midi.
Thus Pierre Paul Riquet completed his greatest work, taking water from its source here in the Montagne Noire for the Canal du Midi in order to finally link the Atlantic and The Mediterranean Sea. The Galaube dam is part of the water management system of the Montagne Noire near Carcassone in Southern France. Reservoirs at the Saint Ferréol, Lampy and Cammazes dams already hold more than 35 million cubic metres of water for use as drinking water, irrigation in the three departments of Aude, Haute-Garonne and Tarn as well as regulating water levels in the Canal du Midi...

In the Montagne Noire area, discover the paper-making industry that has been carried on here for four centuries (history, techniques and demonstration of handmade paper making). Hand-made paper making workshop. School workshop sessions (paper and printing), courses, shop. Guided tours take one hour. Open 363 days a year. In the 17th century, the city of Carcassonne was home to one of the most famous paper manufacturers in the province. The Brousses paper mill has remained unchanged over the past four centuries, carrying tradition forth through time. A small village bar-restaurant where you eat well, without
fuss. Traditional dishes and a varied menu. Yvan Marié, the owner, likes to work
stews. Diners are treated to a good stew, a Burgundian, a coq au vin or a good
onion soup in the winter, grilled over a wood fire as the breast and large salad
as 620 with the gizzards, sliced foie gras and pork summer, all in a festive
atmosphere. All year held musical evenings. Saturdays in winter and twice a week
in summer, music lovers and players of cards or billiards seasoned mix
musicians, sometimes known names of French and international scene. All this
