History and Geography are two inseparable matters when it comes to the Cathar Trail.

Put your foot on the Cathar Trail, and you'll be transported 8 centuries ago, in a rich History environment, without the use of a time machine, just by using your feet!

The success of the book and movie of the Da Vinci Code has fed a new awakening of interest in the Languedoc and its fabulous Cathar castles. These 'Castles in the Sky', perched on their vertiginous rock pinnacles, are some of the last remnants of the ill-fated Cathar 'heretics' and the legends that linked them to the Holy Grail...

    Corbières

    A.O.P. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

What is a mountain guide (AEM)? In the mountain world they are called "smugglers". Intermediates between the curious city dweller and the wild mountains. He acts as a bridge between two worlds, a role that consists of explaining the mountain environment to his customers. For an AEM, the journey to a summit is just as important as the climb. An AEM is mainly a state certificate (1st degree mountaineering), validated in 3 years, the only one that gives access to paid mountain surveillance. A long and rigorous training in the field, in particular supervised by the Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne and other specialists in orientation, geology, fauna, flora, etc ... have trained the candidate to be very versatile. Thanks to its in-depth knowledge of the terrain, the AEM will relieve you not only of choosing the best route based on multiple parameters (weather, altitude, curiosities), but also of finding the right path at the right intersection without having to having to fight with maps and GPS. Many have already seen marmots, few can explain their social and biological organization, it is the same with medieval mountain castles, as well as with the beautiful orchid that we meet in the meadow. In short, leaving with an AEM is the guarantee to share emotions, passions and knowledge. See you soon...

    Bugarach

    Bugarach

Shrowded in mystery, myth and legend, the peak of Mount Bugarach majestically dominates the wider area around Rennes-le-Château. The farming village is in the region of the Cathar castles, situated on spectacular rocky outcrops. Regarded as heretics by the Catholic Church, Cathars sought refuge in these castles in the 13th century when Pope Innocent III launched a full scale crusade against them. The village lies next to the Pic de Bugarach, a rocky peak which, at 1230 metres, is the highest point of the Corbières range of hills. The peak is dwarfed however by the nearby Pyrenees and offers splendid views of the range. Made of limestone with galleries of caves beneath it, the peak is a geological oddity, since its top layers are millions of years older than its bottom ones, making it an 'upside down mountain'. The peak of Bugarach has been shrouded in mystery, with various claims that it houses aliens in cavities beneath the rock. The internet abounds with tales of the late President François Mitterrand being curiously heliported onto the peak, of mysterious digs conducted by the Nazis and later Mossad, the Israeli secret services. There is talk of the area, near to the Cathar castles, holding the Holy Grail or the treasure of the Templars. A visit to Bugarach is said to have inspired Steven Spielberg in his film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind – although the actual mountain he used is Devil's Tower in Wyoming...

    Tuchan

    Tuchan

Tuchan lies in a plain and bordered to the west by Mont Tauch which at 900 meters dominates the town. It has always been productive but whereas you might at one time have seen flocks of sheep or goats wandering around and cereals being cultivated you can now only see varieties of vines like syrah, carignan, grenache, muscat all growing in orderly rows. The town lives off the grape and its current relative prosperity is due to the success of Fitou wine and the successful marketing by the Mont Tauch Co-operative. Tuchan has the atmosphere of a border town with Mont Tauch rising bleakly to the west and the Tramantane wind blowing strongly through the narrow streets. The old border between France and Aragon, and Spain, guarded by the Châteaux of Queribus and Peyrepertuse is only a few kilometres away. The town and its surrounding area has been lived in and fought over for a very long time. In the nearby village of Tauteval, a skeleton of 400,000 years old was found. At Château Nouvelles, 2 kilometres, to the north (where very good Fitou wine can be bought) an old roman road, the via Mercadaria, passes close by. The Romans were here mining the iron, gold, silver and lead. Narbonne, a major Roman port on the Mediterranean coast, now the sous-prefecture for the Aude, is 45 kilometres away...

    Saint-Paul-
    de-Fenouillet
     Agly Fenouillèdes

    Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet | Agly Fenouillèdes

This Mediterranean village in the south of France, its vineyards nestled between sea and mountains, stands on the road to the Cathar castles. St Paul enjoys the privilege of being irrigated by two rivers the Agly and the Boulzane. They have dug their way through the last strong holds of the Corbières mountains creating two natural wonders: The Gorges de Galamus (North) suitable for canyoning etc and The Clue de la Fou (South) with its Via Ferrata. An old Roman town, St. Paul, main centre for the Canton, is home to an architectural curiosity namely the chapel which is an ancient collegiate dating from the thirteenth century, and rebuilt in the seventeenth century. In its tradition winemaking and industry, St Paul is moving gradually towards green tourism and outdoor sports, taking advantage of its unique environment...

    Axat

    Axat

Axat is a pretty tourist town dituated on the D118 in the high valley of Aude. Surrounded by mountains and gorges, the narrowest Gorges St Georges is only 3 km away. The River Aude runs through Axat making a picturesque setting and a popular whitewater sport location. 300 metres of fly fishing stretches where the quality of oxygen in the water attracts salmon and trout. A 100-year-old railway the 'Pays Cathare Tourist Train' links Axat to Rivesaltes. 60 km of track running over impressive viaducts and through tunnels on open air carriages. Also here a fabulous outdoor swimming pool open June to September with great mountain views...

Train touristique du pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes

Train touristique du pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes - Axat - Rivesaltes

The Cathar Fenouilledes country train runs along a railway between Rivesaltes in the Pyrenees Orientales ans Axat in Aude, dignified heritage from the City of the South and a radial relationship between Carcassonne and Rivesaltes. Along the way you can see numerous and remarkable works of art as it winds its way through valleys and tunnels: Flirting languidly with the rivers Agly and Aude, it reveals the rocky countryside, sprinkled with vineyards on the mountainside, dominated by many notables sites (The Catlar Castle at Queribus, The Tour of Far, the relay station of froça real...) before reaching the forest at the end of an audacious railway journey...

    Montaillou

    Montaillou

Montaillou is a small village in the remote Sabarthès area where Catharism was revived in the fouteenth century. In 1318 the whole village was arrested on the orders of the bishop of Pamiers, Jacques Fournier, who had been the Cistercian Abbot of Fontfroide and who now felt a vocation as an Inquisitor. Exceptionally, he was interested in the truth about Catharism, and he kept records of the interrogations. Even more exceptionally, years later he was elected Pope (Benedict XII) so his records were preserved in the Vatican archives. These records form the basis of a book about the village by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie.  The centuries-old church of the Notre Dame of Carnesses, an intimate, warm spot, is idyllically located in the open landscape. The names on the graves at the churchyard show that the people are apparently all descendants of the Cathars. The fontcanal, the most important spring of medieval Montaillou, still works. Today there is almost nothing left of the medieval village, except for the foundations and a few walls. You get the best view of modern Montaillou from the fontcanal that lies very close to the ruins...
