Mont-Louis - City of the Sun King - The citadel is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mont-Louis, is one of nine towns entirely built by France's greatest military architect, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. In 1679, Louis XIV approved the financing of Mont-Louis, defending the passage to the Roussillon region of France. Inaugurated in 1681, Mont-Louis completed the line of defences stretching from Mediterranean Sea. Created from scratch by Vauban, it is a perfect example of 17th century fortified military architecture in which Vauban was able to express his creativity fully. Mont-Louis still has a military function today—the National Commando Training Centre — the Centre National d’Entraînement Commando – is housed in the citadel buildings. The history of the site is recounted in several guided tours of the citadel and the Puits des Forçats area, but you are also free to wander round at your leisure. The church has lots of baroque art treasures, while walking along the pathway at the foot of the ramparts, you can appreciate the genius of Vauban and the beauty of the site...

Prades - Perched at an altitude of 950 metres, in the heart of the Prades massif, the former capital of the county of Prades owes its nickname of vil-la vermella to the many reddish stone buildings it houses. With just under 700 inhabitants, you will enjoy visiting its old centre and especially the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary enthroned in the Plaça Major. Above all, Prades is an excellent starting point for a family outing to the surrounding hills and valleys. Here we recommend a stop at the tourist office to enquire about the various cycling and hiking routes to be followed...

Symbol and pride of the Catalan Pyrenees, Le Train Jaune offers an exceptional view of the Tet Valley and the plateau of Cerdagne. The Train Jaune, also called the canary because of its color, connects Villefranche-de-Conflent (427 meters) with Latour-de-Carol (1232 meters) on a 63 km track and climbs with 1200 meters of difference in altitude to the highest station of France 'Bolquère' at 1593 meters. It takes approx. 3 hours from one end of the line to the other, during which you have plenty of time to photograph the landscape of the Têt Valley and the Cerdan Plateau. 60 km of architectural masterpieces in the Catalan Pyrenees ... The Train Jaune railway, built at the turn of the century, was intended to link the Catalan highlands with the rest of the department. The first works in 1903 made it possible from 1910 to link Villefranche-de-Conflent with Mont-Louis...

Montaillou is a small village in the remote Sabarthès area
where Catharism was revived in the fouteenth century. In 1318 the whole village
was arrested on the orders of the bishop of Pamiers, Jacques Fournier, who had
been the Cistercian Abbot of Fontfroide and who now felt a vocation as an
Inquisitor. Exceptionally, he was interested in the truth about Catharism, and
he kept records of the interrogations. Even more exceptionally, years later he
was elected Pope (Benedict XII) so his records were preserved in the Vatican
archives. These records form the basis of a book about the village by Emmanuel
Le Roy Ladurie. The centuries-old church of the Notre Dame of Carnesses, an
intimate, warm spot, is idyllically located in the open landscape. The names on
the graves at the churchyard show that the people are apparently all descendants
of the Cathars. The fontcanal, the most important spring of medieval Montaillou,
still works. Today there is almost nothing left of the medieval village, except
for the foundations and a few walls. You get the best view of modern Montaillou
from the fontcanal that lies very close to the ruins...

West of Perpignan (90 km), at an altitude of between 1,600 and 1,800 metres, facing due south, Font-Romeu is probably the Pyrenean resort best known to the French. Air conditioning was introduced at the very beginning of the 20th century, but it was in 1914, with the construction of the imposing Grand Hotel, that the resort made a name for itself. Built on the heights of the city, this palace of two hundred rooms attracted wealthy personalities from all over Europe. After the Second World War, the city of Cerdan regained a second wind thanks to the democratization of winter sports, but also thanks to its climatic vocation. Clean, dry air, especially beneficial to asthmatics. But Font-Romeu is also a sporting town. Its consecration came in particular from the creation of the climatic and sports high school as well as the national altitude training centre, attended by high-level athletes. Font-Romeu is of course a leading winter sports resort in the Pyrenean chain, with its 54 kilometres of downhill ski slopes, 111 for cross-country skiing and 23 ski lifts. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, running trail... so many activities to do and that are declined to infinity...
