At the heart of a small appellation in the Languedoc, la Malepère and at the gates of Carcassonne, La Domaine du Pas de la Dame has 26 hectares of vineyards.

Located on the top of the Malepère on two different plots, the terroirs of "Brens" and "Tuileries" are on more than 300 meters height between valleys, hills and oak forests. In the distance, the Pyrenees landscape gives an infinite allure...

Founded by Claude and Josiane Baillette along with a historical employee, the estate has been taken over by their son Matthew Baillette and their son in law Franck Roger in which they have achieved their dream of creating unique terroir wines.

The range of varieties that are currently present on the domain consists of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Syrah, Grenache and Chardonnay. A subtle blend of grape varieties of Aquitaine, Burgundy and Occitan varieties

The Terroir the "Brens" consists of a group of plots that are the highest of the Domain and the Malepère in general, with a height of 300 to 350 meters. We are on a terroir for a late maturing, usually fifteen days later than in the lower terroirs. The plots covers 10 hectares, this section only consists of hills and is difficult to manipulate. It is in this setting that the ocean grape varieties thrive: such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which converge here. The integration of these grape varieties in a mix of 90 hectares of meadows, forests and fallow land and the distance to other wine plots protects it from certain diseases and gives it an important biodiversity.

Larger than the terroir of "Brens" and at lower altitude (250 to 270 meters), the terroir de la Tuileries is a composition of plots with vines of Aquitaine, Burgundy and Occitanie. The terroir is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Together at different heights and different slopes grow Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot, Chardonnay, Grenache and Syrah. On the lower parts of the terroir de la Tuileries, one will find lots of Syrah and Chardonnay; slightly higher on the slopes to the south and southeast, we find Pinot, Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet. The location of these plots are carefully chosen to achieve an optimal result of the planted grape varieties. Like the terroir de Brens, this mix of parcels is also independent of the other vineyards and has a rich biodiverse...

Malepère

A.O.P. Malepère - Côtes de la Malepère

The Malepère region was awarded AOC status on May 2nd 2007. It is a hilly area south-west of the city of Carcassonne which is included in the appellation along with 31 other towns and villages. Although the area claims a great history of wine making it was in the 1970’s that the vineyards began to be replanted and VDQS status was granted. VDQS is the intermediary wine designation between Vin de Pays and AOC and is a testing ground for would-be AOC’s to prove that wines from all the producers share a common personality before they can be awarded full AOC status. Although an obscure region the Malepère is well worth a visit and offers a very different terrain to the more recognizable Languedoc appellations. There are many interesting medieval circular villages to visit. They were built this way to form ramparts to act as protection for the inhabitants. The Cathar religion was strong here and the area is immersed in history and folklore...
