Le Jardin Des Gorges - Belvianes-et-Cavirac
Le Jardin Des Gorges - Belvianes-et-Cavirac

A land of castles nested within impregnable rocky peaks inhabited one thousand years ago the mysterious Cathares;
A warm welcoming land perfumed with Mediterranean fragrances such as wild thyme and lavender;
An area of gorges and torrents, forests and mountains, wild boars, bears and chamois;
A country of extreme natural landscape where one can get lost in the beauty and peacefulness.

Situated at the doors of the majestic Peaks of the Défilé de la Pierre Lys on the border of the Pyrénées Audoises upper valley, within an authentic village bearing the sweet name of Belvianes et Cavirac, the Jardin des Gorges guest house will welcome you.

Half way between the sea and mountains, only one hour from the ski runs of Font Romeu and the Mediterranean beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer, this region, drenched in history and culture has everything to surprise, amaze and even intrigue...

Alone or with friends, couple or family, we promise you an exciting stay...

The Aude Region stretches from the Mediterranean in the east to Castelnaudary in the west, the Montagne Noire in the north and the Pyrénées in the south. Carcassonne is the capital and the other major centres are Narbonne and Limoux. The Aude is a popular with visitors due to its Mediterranean beaches, lakes, rivers, mountains, vineyards and wineries. Whether you enjoy a relaxed or activity holiday the Aude has something to offer every one of all ages and is an excellent all year round holiday destination.

The Largest Medieval Walled City in Europe Carcassonne is a sight to behold, an entire medieval city, with towers, narrow passages, double walls, and centuries of history. A visit to Carcassonne is like stepping back to the time of knights, troubadors, kings and queens, noblemen and knaves, and of course the church. It was in this region that one of the largest, longest and fiercest battles of the French Crusades took place in the 13th century as the Pope's army tried to capture the city of Carcassonne. They never did; it was taken by trickery and broken promises.
Imagine an 11th Century Chateau (with all modern conveniences) surrounded by vineyards - the views, the wines, the solitude, the history, the seasons, the food!

Castelnaudary – a Canal du Midi town famous for cassoulet – a great local dish of beans, sausage and duck (30 minutes away)...

Bureau des guides et accompagnateurs des Pyrénées Audoises

Bureau des guides et accompagnateurs des Pyrénées audoises - Quillan

What is a mountain guide (AEM)? In the mountain world they are called "smugglers". Intermediates between the curious city dweller and the wild mountains. He acts as a bridge between two worlds, a role that consists of explaining the mountain environment to his customers. For an AEM, the journey to a summit is just as important as the climb. An AEM is mainly a state certificate (1st degree mountaineering), validated in 3 years, the only one that gives access to paid mountain surveillance. A long and rigorous training in the field, in particular supervised by the Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne and other specialists in orientation, geology, fauna, flora, etc ... have trained the candidate to be very versatile. Thanks to its in-depth knowledge of the terrain, the AEM will relieve you not only of choosing the best route based on multiple parameters (weather, altitude, curiosities), but also of finding the right path at the right intersection without having to having to fight with maps and GPS. Many have already seen marmots, few can explain their social and biological organization, it is the same with medieval mountain castles, as well as with the beautiful orchid that we meet in the meadow. In short, leaving with an AEM is the guarantee to share emotions, passions and knowledge. See you soon...

de Pierre Lys

Gorges de Pierre Lys - Saint-Martin-Lys

South-west of Quillan the River Aude and its tributaries have carved magnificent ravines and gorges in the landscape, and over the course of thousands of years have created the fine limestone cliff scenery that we enjoy today. Among the highlights, the road heading south from Quillan to Axat (the D117) passes through the deep Gorges de Pierre-Lys, with cliffs either side of the road stretching to 700 metres in height. From Quillan to Axat; Impressive passage between the cliffs. The "Trou du Curé" recalls the memory of Father Armand Felix, vicar of St Martin Lys, who drilled with the help of his parishioners the first tunnel, a dozen yards long, in the 18th century...

Rodeo Raft Belvianes

Rodeo Raft - Belvianes-et-Cavirac

Rafting and enjoying the wild nature in the Pyrenees. Rodeo Raft is located in Belvianes near Quillan. The centre is about one hour drive from Carcassonne and a great area to visit with lots more white water potential. The best time to sit is in early spring with the snow melt and a bit of rain fall. We got a dam release in the afternoon but Rodeo Raft can help with locations. In this wild, the descent offers both a challenge and a special relationship with water and nature. The river allows everyone to have fun while ensuring maximum safety. They also do canyoning, duckys (hotdogs) and hydrospeeds...

Château de Puivert

Château de Puivert - Puivert

Puivert Castle, locally known as Château de Puivert, lies near the village with the same name, west of the town of Quillan in the Languedoc-Roussillion region in France. Of all the Cathares castles, Puivert Castle certainly is one of the best preserved. It was built in the 14th century. With its 35 meters high keep in which four splendid rooms are superimposed, its 6 towers incorporated in its enclosure wall, this castle dominates the old glacial lake of Puivert below. One of the rooms in the keep has very nice carvings of 8 characters with medieval musical instruments on its walls. You can climb to the top of the keep which offers a great view on the Quercorb plain to north, to the west of Montségur Castle with the summits of the Pyrenees behind it and to the east of the peak of Bugarach...

Château d’Arques

Château d’Arques - Arques

In the heart of the village stands the birthplace of Déodat Roché (1877-1978), the historian of Catharism. To commemorate the village's illustrious son, the house today contains a permanent exhibition devoted to Catharism. It offers visitors 4 approaches to this religion that go beyond the purely religious: first, a historical approach; second, a spiritual approach; third a political approach; finally an approach devoted to everyday life among the Cathars. On the first floor a sound recording enables visitors to find out about Déodat Roché's life...

Shrowded in mystery, myth and legend, the peak of Mount Bugarach majestically dominates the wider area around Rennes-le-Château. The farming village is in the region of the Cathar castles, situated on spectacular rocky outcrops. Regarded as heretics by the Catholic Church, Cathars sought refuge in these castles in the 13th century when Pope Innocent III launched a full scale crusade against them. The village lies next to the Pic de Bugarach, a rocky peak which, at 1230 metres, is the highest point of the Corbières range of hills. The peak is dwarfed however by the nearby Pyrenees and offers splendid views of the range. Made of limestone with galleries of caves beneath it, the peak is a geological oddity, since its top layers are millions of years older than its bottom ones, making it an 'upside down mountain'. The peak of Bugarach has been shrouded in mystery, with various claims that it houses aliens in cavities beneath the rock. The internet abounds with tales of the late President François Mitterrand being curiously heliported onto the peak, of mysterious digs conducted by the Nazis and later Mossad, the Israeli secret services. There is talk of the area, near to the Cathar castles, holding the Holy Grail or the treasure of the Templars. A visit to Bugarach is said to have inspired Steven Spielberg in his film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind – although the actual mountain he used is Devil's Tower in Wyoming...
