Le Chemin de la Barte - Puivert

Between the plain of Puivert and the Plateau de Sault, this path that connects the hamlet of Lescale with the much more shaded La Malayrède, offers a magnificent view of the landscape of Quercorb and its surroundings. Near the Maquis de Picaussel, the view extends to the forests to the Pyrenees Ariégeoises. To the north are the village and the Château de Puivert which occasionally appear through the pine forests, beech forests and spruce trees, which cross this hilly route.

1. From Place de la Libération, follow the "Le Maquis de Picaussel" on the left through rue des Martyrs. Or go down from the parking lot to the right of the church and then turn left towards the beginning of the path. At the crossing, at the information boards, you go on a grassy path to the footbridge.
2. After the footbridge on the Blau, take the left path for 500 m (the one on the right goes up to the Maquis).
3. At the intersection, take the path on the right for 20 m, then again on the right on the trail. After a beech forest, a sign indicates Malayrede at 2 km. On the left, the steep climb zigzags 500 m between the boxwood, to a small fence.
4. At the edge of a clearing, the view opens onto L'Escale, the Puivert plain and opposite, the Sarrat du Pas de l'Ours (950 m) and the Pic du Minier (1108 m). Climb halfway up a grassy path and then continue between the box trees and ignore the paths on each side. A fence marks the entrance to the Malayrèd...
5. Go left at the wash house. A sign indicates Camp Bonnaure at 6 km. The route then starts with a slight climb on the slope and alternates passages among the pines and the oaks, and offers many viewpoints on the Maquis de Picaussel, the Plateau de Sault, les Monts d'Olmes and the Pyrenees Ariégeoises region. Then the path descends to the left in the shadow of the pines. Continue on a wider path and at the crossroads, turn right and then go slightly further to the left.

6. Arriving at the runway of hang gliders and paragliders, the landscape of Puivert, the lake and the castle opens up. Along the track, you reach a hairpin bend up to the sign Camp Bonnaure 4 km. Follow the forest road for 1.5 km, past a shady picnic area. Turn left on the path down, cross a small meadow and continue through the edge of the forest. Follow the road at Camp Gast left down and follow the road to enter the hamlet.

7. Follow Rue de la Forêt, then left, Rue du Puit and Rue de la Rivière and passing stables. Leave the dirt road at the end of the street. Do not go to the barn but turn left at the exit of the hamlet and follow the signs of the Cathar Route. Cross a stream and follow it to a crossroad. On the right, follow the Blau and cross it under the trees. Follow a small road, at the Métairie du Sourd and turn left. Pass a number of houses to the end of the asphalt, dominated by a small shed. Go straight ahead on the path to the footbridge of the Blau. Turn right and go up to l'Escale.

Bureau des guides et accompagnateurs des Pyrénées audoises - Quillan
What is a mountain guide (AEM)? In the mountain world they are called "smugglers". Intermediates between the curious city dweller and the wild mountains. He acts as a bridge between two worlds, a role that consists of explaining the mountain environment to his customers. For an AEM, the journey to a summit is just as important as the climb. An AEM is mainly a state certificate (1st degree mountaineering), validated in 3 years, the only one that gives access to paid mountain surveillance. A long and rigorous training in the field, in particular supervised by the Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne and other specialists in orientation, geology, fauna, flora, etc ... have trained the candidate to be very versatile. Thanks to its in-depth knowledge of the terrain, the AEM will relieve you not only of choosing the best route based on multiple parameters (weather, altitude, curiosities), but also of finding the right path at the right intersection without having to having to fight with maps and GPS. Many have already seen marmots, few can explain their social and biological organization, it is the same with medieval mountain castles, as well as with the beautiful orchid that we meet in the meadow. In short, leaving with an AEM is the guarantee to share emotions, passions and knowledge. See you soon...
