Le Capitole - Hotel de Ville - Toulouse

In Toulouse there is no Mairie, but rather a majestic Capitole! An emblematic building, it is home to the town hall, a theatre and rooms of state where you can bump into celebrities from the city. The seat of municipal power since its construction, commissioned by the Capitouls in the XII Century, transformed and embellished in every era, La Capitole shows its majestic Neo-Classical façade to the unmistakable square that shares its name.
Le Capitole - Hotel de Ville - Toulouse
Its walls could tell of the great moments in the history of Toulouse: from the Cathar episode to the creation of the Floral Games, from the Counts of Toulouse to the siege of the city. On the first floor, you cross magnificent reception rooms that are decorated with the Allegories of Love by Paul Gervais, 10 giant canvases by Henri Martin and, notably, the Salle des Illustres whose paintings retrace the history of Toulouse and whose busts bring back to life the personalities that have defined the city. Lyrical art lovers? Le Capitole is also the famous Toulouse opera house.
The superb triumphal portal of the Henri IV courtyard of the Capitol is an assembly of three different parts made separately by artists of the Toulouse Renaissance. It was assembled in its current state at the very beginning of the 17th century. He uses a symbolic language highlighting the dignity of the city and even of the Crown. The lower part was made in 1546 by Nicolas Bachelier on a drawing by Jean Rancy. It represents Pallas because, as the Latin poet Martial tells us, she had been instituted protective goddess of Toulouse in Roman times (probably by the emperor Domitian). This was a prestigious tutelary figure put forward by the capitouls of the Renaissance. Here, Pallas holds a lamb in his arms and is surrounded by two female figures: one carrying a staff with the Toulouse cross (originally it was an owl, an attribute of Pallas), the other holding up a laurel wreath and a flowering branch.

The middle part of the portal was sculpted by Geoffroy Jarry in 1561, it shows captive and shackled slaves surrounding the blazon of Toulouse, to symbolize the power of the city as the capital of Languedoc. Sphinxes and coats of arms of capitouls complete this decor. The upper part of the portal, decorated with the coats of arms of the capitouls of the year, is organized around a marble statue (s) of Henry IV, the work of Thomas Hurtamat (1607). Made during the King's lifetime, a rare occurrence for Henry IV, it testifies to the Crown's desire to restore the political image of the King of France in an ultra-Catholic city which a few years earlier had violently opposed his accession to the throne...

Le Seuil de Naurouze

Le Seuil de Naurouze

The Naurouze, you can visit the watershed between ocean and Mediterranean. The bike path along the banks will take you on a hike from Toulouse to Sète. We are here to welcome you, comfort you, encourage you ... and above all to enjoy!... The Seuil de Naurouze, aka Col de Naurouze, is a mountain pass in southern France. It is the watershed point identified by Pierre-Paul Riquet when he designed and built the Canal du Midi. Water falling on the western side of this point flows to the Atlantic Ocean and on the eastern side to the Mediterranean Sea. It is on the border of the department of Haute-Garonne and the department of the Aude. In 1827, the heirs of Riquet built the Riquet Obelisk. The obelisk has a dedication: 'To Pierre-Paul Riquet, Baron Bonrepos, author of the Two Seas Canal in Languedoc'. It is erected near the site of the former octagonal holding tank, called the Bassin de Naurouze created during the building of the Canal du Midi. The flow of water from the Bassin de St. Ferreol joins the Canal du Midi at this point...

Castelnaudary

Castelnaudary

Castelnaudary is probably most famous for a 'peasant' dish of beans and various meats known as Cassoulet. It can take two days or more to prepare and is great comfort food for a chilly winter evening. The traditional cooking vessel is an earthenware pot from Issel called a cassole for which the dish is named. The ingredients include haricot beans grown in Pamiers or Lavelanet, duck confit, garlic sausage, pork, Toulouse sausage and mutton - but not necessarily all at the same time but a combination of several of them. If it's done absolutely to tradition, apparently is must be cooked in a baker's oven fired with rushes from the Montange Noire. In town you will find some fine old mansions, a restored windmill and an 18th Century semaphore tower. It is a real pleasure to spend a couple of hours in Castelnaudary having coffee or shopping for a picnic in the market. Today it serves as an important commercial centre for the rolling Lauragais farming country hereabouts, as it once was for the traffic on the Canal du Midi in the 17th century when agricultural and manufactured produce became easier to export to which it owed a period of prosperity. The Grand Bassin in the town at 7 hectares is the largest open area of water in the canal, and is today its major pleasure port. In fact, the most flattering view of the town is still that from the canal's Grand Bassin, which makes it look remarkably like a Greek island town, with its ancient houses climbing the hillside from the water's edge...
