Mazamet sits in a natural valley, le Thoré, at 280 m altitude, between the two mountain ranges of the Montagnès Noire and the Monts de Lacune, both rising to 1,200 m. Considering its geography within SW France, it surprises many that both ranges are the furthest outpost of the Massif Central.

The mountains that surround Mazamet & its fast-flowing rivers, lend much to its development from a humble beginning to one of the most prosperous towns throughout France in the 19th century.

Evidence of early settlement in the area date back to the Magdalenian (10,000 BC). On the outskirts of Mazamet, near the village of Aiguefonde, traces of activity from this period was discovered in the cave of Lacalm. Later evidence from the Neolithic period is in the number of megalithic monuments, dotted around the landscape close to Mazamet...

Musée du Catharisme -

Musée du Catharisme - Maison des Mémoires de Mazamet - Mazemet

Why an exhibition of Occitan Catharism in Mazamet? Catharism, dissident religion of the Christian faith, considered to be a heresy by the all-powerful Catholic Church, was condemned, and its adepts were persecuted. The Cathars were obliged to flee into remote areas and found refuge in the Montagne Noire : at the edge of the Aude Cathar Country. The Tarn side of this mountainous massif constituted a place of refuge and resistance for this religion. Hautpoul, the historic birthplace of Mazamet, ancient castrum (fortified village) perched on a rocky outcrop, served as a retreat during the period of the Inquisition. It was also one of the places of residence of the Cathar Archbishop of the diocese of Albi in the 13th century. This Medieval village is one of the rare vestiges of the Cathar time to be situated on the Tarn side of the Montagne Noire...

Pradelles-Cabardès

Pradelles-Cabardès

Pradelles-Cabardès is the highest village of the Motagne Noir since its territory includes the Pic de Nore (1211 m), highest point of the massif. Built on a mountainside overlooking a beautiful Pradelles agricultural plateau offering a mosaic of groves accessed by pleasant footpaths. Lake close to the village offers a pleasant environment where swimming and fishing are possible. The eighteenth and nineteenth century are the hallmark of Pradelles for making natural ice. Snow stored in underground silos by villagers harnessed and delivered in convoys allowed bold and enterprising men to create a real business, that of ice from the Montagne Noir, the book is in Narbonne, Carcassonne, Mazamet, one finds even at Montauban. Under the shade of a beech or just on the edge of one of these stone paths traditionally used, the old 'ice boxes' built, typical of a local mountain architecture, will amaze you as you discover. They tell the story of these 'ice adventurers' who believed in the economic development of their village. In the center a church with its Romanesque tower , well restored attracted by the beauty of its octagonal bell tower, with its superb slated roof and sometimes by the musical notes of the bells! When we step in Pradelles Cabardès you really want it continues...
