La Grande Fontaine is located just below the hill on the main street, inside this is the local bar, while outside it is a meeting place for tourists.
Drinking a cup of coffee can be fun here. Buy the pastries across the street from the bakery, and then order the coffee on the terrace.
It is also no problem with eating breakfast that you have purchased elsewhere, because the Grande Fontaine does not sell pasteries.
An omelet and salad in the afternoon can be very enjoyable and cheap here, and there are also full meals available for both afternoon and evening...
Come to the beautiful medieval village of Caunes-Minervois and enjoy the warmth and atmosphere of the South of France without the crowding and costs of Provence or the Riviera.

L'abbaye de Caunes Minervois

Les Carrières et le Marbre - Caunes-Minervois

Notre Dame du Cros

Itinerary around Caunes Minervois |
From the foothills to the Montagne Noire, the Clamoux Gorges offer an exceptional panorama. Entering the Minervois means also entering History. There are exceptional sites such a s the abbey at Caunes-Minervois, the giant chasm of Cabrespine and marble quarries. On the way to the mountains you will see dolmens, taste local produce, and even go for a walk with lamas! As soon as you enter the town, an 8-metre high marble sculpture reminds you that you are in the area of the famous red marble used in the construction of many monuments including the «Trianon» at Versailles, the Paris Opera House, the Great Mosque in Cordoba, and Saint Peter’s in Rome… Leave your car at the Europe car park and go towards the Abbey and its two-level cloister, located in the medieval village. The Tourism Office proposes a guided visit of the site. The Abbey was on a pilgrimage route. You can also visit the many artists’ studios in Caunes Minervois : Pottery studio, Imagination workshop, Painters’ dens, or other Artists’ houses and their fashion creations and artistic jewellery...

Le Clos du Marbrier |
An old workshop for marble builtup against the medieval ramparts of the village, a garden at the end of a narrow street nestled in the heart of Caunes Minervois, a beautiful bergerie overlooking the Argent Double river and the Pyrenees off in the distance, made me dream. Here there is not a long family tradition: every thing is to be invented.
A winery on two levels, a small, shady tasting area, a naturally cool cellar with oak barrels for aging the wines, taking form little by little in what become at the same time aplace of work and a place for living. The vines of Clos du Marbrier are situated in the magnificient "terroirs" of Félines Minervois and La Livinière in the foothills of the Montagne Noire at 400 meters altitude.
While stroling the lanes of the village on the path marked by the ceramic lizard, you will not miss passing the Clos du Marbrier. Tasting the wines and visit the winery rather by a appointment.
Le Clos du Marbrier is situated in the village of Caunes Minervois...

Built on the top of bedrock at 300m above sea level, the four towers of the site of Lastours (Cabaret, Tour Régine, and Surdespine Quertinheux) proudly dominate the course of Orbiel (the river of olive trees) and the torrent Grésilhou in a wild landscape bristling with cypress. Lock Cabardès since the early Middle Ages, they controlled one of the main pathways in the Cabardès and the Black Mountain and took all their importance at the time of the crusade against the Albigensians. Archaeological excavations carried out since 1980 under the direction of Marie-Elise Gardel, have helped to uncover the medieval village of Cabaret, the Mecca of Catharism and the resistance against the Crusader armies.
