Welcome to Port Lauragais on the A61 motorway between Toulouse and Carcassonne in the Haute-Garonne. At Port Lauragais, 20 minutes from Toulouse and Castelnaudary, you will find a green oasis of calm where the A 61 motorway and the Canal du Midi intersect. Founded in 1983, on a peninsula at the junction of the Canal du Midi motorway and the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostella trails, we welcome you to one of the most beautiful regions of France. Georges Gouttes has turned this place into a true oasis of peace...
Come and taste the regional cuisine, including the famous Cassoulet de Castelnaudary, in our restaurant La Dinée.
Gastronomic criticism - ASF Guide - Jean Ferniot: “The welcome here is always warm and the exterior decor is magnificent: Port-Lauragais is one of the great successes of the French motorway network. The Cassoulet remains equal to itself: top quality! With a good Fitou, I really enjoyed myself. The Lauragaise salad retains its appeal. " |

The Naurouze, you can visit the watershed between ocean and Mediterranean. The bike path along the banks will take you on a hike from Toulouse to Sète. We are here to welcome you, comfort you, encourage you ... and above all to enjoy!...
The Seuil de Naurouze, aka Col de Naurouze, is a mountain pass in southern France. It is the watershed point identified by Pierre-Paul Riquet when he designed and built the Canal du Midi. Water falling on the western side of this point flows to the Atlantic Ocean and on the eastern side to the Mediterranean Sea. It is on the border of the department of Haute-Garonne and the department of the Aude.
In 1827, the heirs of Riquet built the Riquet Obelisk. The obelisk has a dedication: "To Pierre-Paul Riquet, Baron Bonrepos, author of the Two Seas Canal in Languedoc". It is erected near the site of the former octagonal holding tank, called the Bassin de Naurouze created during the building of the Canal du Midi. The flow of water from the Bassin de St. Ferreol joins the Canal du Midi at this point...

Although not strictly in Languedoc, Toulouse is France’s
sixth largest city and is understandably a big draw for visitors in the west of
the region. A former capital of Languedoc, this city boasts attraction after
attraction: stunning medieval churches, grand private mansions that add an extra
air of elegance to an already gracious city, and buildings fashioned out of soft
pink brick which, as the sun sets, reflect the fading rays in a magnificently
soporific show of light. Toulouse has a life about it, unrivalled by any other
city in the region; vibrant, energetic and proud. Home to European aircraft
manufacturer, Airbus, this is also one of the best connected cities in the
entire south of France. Founded on the Garonne river as Tolosa, the city was
moved to its present position by the Romans in 120 BC. Following the collapse of
the Roman empire, Toulouse came under the control of various local counts who
gradually extended their dominance over much of southern France. However, things
came to a bloody end in 1271 when forces from northern France finally tired of
the city’s increasing support for Catharism and launched a crusade against the
heretics. The Catholic victory led to the establishment of the university in the
early thirteenth century. A major breakthrough in Toulouse’s fortunes came with
the completion of the Canal du Midi in 1666 which provided the city with access
to the sea. Occupied by the Nazis during World War 2, thankfully the city
escaped the worst ravages of the war and today the city is a prosperous centre
of hi-tech industry... |

Both the Romans and Leonardo Da Vinci already had the idea of creating a river connection between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. However, there was always a problem. For example, a way had to be found to overcome the 194-meter-high Seuil de Naurouze ridge. Over the centuries, the pressure increased. A canal had to be built so that the ships of the French fleet would not have to make the 2000 kilometer detour around enemy Spain. A canal connecting the Atlantic to the Mediterranean would not only be a huge time saver. They also avoided difficulties with the Spaniards. In the end it was an engineer from Béziers named Pierre-Paul Riquet who came up with the idea of diverting another river that originated on the ridge, the so-called Fontaine de la Grave. This would give a canal sufficient water supply, so that a canal could be dug around the ridge. King Louis XIV was aware of the canal's economic, political and military interests, which led to the construction of the Canal du Midi in 1666. Tens of thousands of workers worked for 14 years on the 328 structures that the Canal du Midi has, such as bridges, aqueducts and basins. The canal was completed in 1681. Pierre-Paul Riquet was never allowed to view the channel in its entirety. He died a year before delivery. The Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1969. The economic importance of the canal has since been minimized because commercial inland shipping has largely disappeared. Along the canal are several towns, monuments and harbors that are worth a visit. A nice experience is to explore the canal by boat, but a nice walk or bike ride along the Canal du Midi is also highly recommended!
