La Cantine du Curé - Caunes-Minervois

Come to La Cantine du Curé to feel at home! This could be the motto of this tapas bar-restaurant, where Benjamin and his team welcome you on the terrace or in the dining room, here conviviality and a sense of sharing take on their full meaning. Benjamin will advise and guide you as a good winegrower, on the choice of your drink, and if you are lucky, he will make you taste his own organic cuvées (Domaine Benjamin Taillandier in Caunes) at the bend of a game of petanque, on the boules court of the garden.
La Cantine du Curé - Caunes-Minervois
Here, we prefer the short circuits and local producers, the tapas menu changes every week, the canned foods are served at any time and in summer, you can hesitate among more than 150 wine references, or taste a regional artisanal beer from Alaryk. 80% of their wines are made with organic, biodynamic or natural wines, all the authenticity of the terroir and the vine in your glass, a selection is made every week. During the month of April and then from October to December, the terrace is transformed into a cocoon, like a small wooden chalet, near the stove, a cosy atmosphere guaranteed so that with friends we can change the world.
Caunes-Minervois, land of the famous red marble, is announced with its "neocubist totem pole" at the entrance of the village. Nestled around its Benedictine abbey, surrounded by the remains of the fortified enclosure, the village of Caunes has a surprising architectural heritage! Crossed by the Argent Double river which flows all year round, this small village with its old alleys will reveal its sumptuous Renaissance-style mansions, its small square with two 300-year-old plane trees, its remarkable facades with 15th and 17th century windows and mouldings, and also numerous art workshops.

From periods of blossoming to periods of decline, through the tumult of the crusade launched by the King of France against the Albigensians, the village and its abbey have survived through the centuries... When his story is told by the incredible guide Delphine Alberola, you can't get enough of it! Footpaths will lead you to the quarries of the famous red marble from "la petite griotte" to "l'incarnat", which decorates the Trianon of Versailles, the Opéra Garnier, the Arc de Triomphe... A remarkable village to discover!

Minervois

A.O.P. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Randonnée
La Draille

La Draille - Caunes-Minervois

At the foot of the Montagne Noire, between vines and shrubs, Caunes-Minervois, a beautiful medieval village, famous for the quality of its red marble that was used to famous monuments such as the Grand Trianon at Versailles, Opera Garnier and the capitole of Toulouse, to name a few. But Caunes-Minervois is also known for its former Benedictine Abbey, founded in 780. The abbey church with two bell towers, richly decorated with red marble from Caunes, has a wonderful romance apse from the 11th century, and a nice working portal from the 13th century. Apart from this architectural gem is also a cloister from the 18th century, a tomb with the remains of the first Carolingian church and monastic buildings from the 17th century. After the visit of the abbey the time to stroll through the streets of Caunes-Minervois, surrounded by medieval and Renaissance houses. This is also the opportunity to admire the facades of the gorgeous old buildings, such as hotel Sicard from the 14th century, and hotel Alibert in the 15th and 16th centuries. Notre-Dame du Cros at the Trausse road just outside Caunes Minervois should definitely not be missed. After about 400 to 500 meters on this road, outside the village, turn left at the intersection, then please skip the narrow road up along the water, leading to the Notre Dame du Cros (former pilgrimage). Right at the end there is a parking near the chapel, after approximately 2 km. Visit the chapel of Notre Dame du Cros, 12th century, built near a so-called "miraculous" source on the south side of the gorges in the valley of the river Cros...
