Ax-les-Thermes

Ax-les-Thermes

Twenty kilometres southeast of Tarascon, and still on the river, the spa town of AX-LES-THERMES is completely walled in by mountains and its principal value is as a base for exploring the surrounding peaks and as a staging post on the way to Andorra or on down the N20 to Font-Romeu and, ultimately, Perpignan and the Mediterranean. The town itself is small and agreeable enough, but there's little to see once you've wandered a couple of streets in the quarter to the right of the N20, which forms the main street, avenue Delcassé. Rue de l'École and rue de la Boucarie retain a few medieval buildings, and above place du Breilh, the church of St-Vincent is of architectural interest for its Romanesque tower. Just across the road you can dangle your feet for free in the Bassin des Ladres, a pool of hot sulphurous water which is all that remains of the hospital founded in 1260 by St Louis for soldiers wounded in the Crusades...

Pas de la Casa

Pas de la Casa

Pas de la Casa is set right on the border between Andorra and France in the fantastic Andorran Pyrenees. Most of the accommodation is located near the main lift base and slopes. The resort centre is full of shops, bars, restaurants and a sports centre. The Grandvalira area offers a huge 193Km of piste to play on whilst you stay in Pas de la Casa. The area has a good snow record, modern lift system and good English speaking ski school. This is a resort best suited to beginners and improving intermediates. Beginners will find everything they need in Pas de la Casa as the easy nursery slopes are located right in the centre of resort and the Ski School was recently voted the best in Europe so you will be in good hands. Intermediates will find that the local slopes will be best for confident intermediates with plenty of top to bottom reds on the main ridge. More advanced skiers cat take advantage of the Grand Valira pass and ski or board the entire area. Test your off-piste skills with a guide in Grau Roig or take on the bumps to Soldeu village. If you are looking for a terrain park there is a slope-style area with jumps at Grau Roig and the new Isards terrain park and boardercross at Pas. Pas de la Casa is renowned for its buzzing nightlife and there are certainly plenty of bars and clubs to choose from. Off the slopes you can go snowmobiling, dog sledding and snowshoeing. Alternatively you can visit the leisure centre or go shopping...

Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via

Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via

West of Perpignan (90 km), at an altitude of between 1,600 and 1,800 metres, facing due south, Font-Romeu is probably the Pyrenean resort best known to the French. Air conditioning was introduced at the very beginning of the 20th century, but it was in 1914, with the construction of the imposing Grand Hotel, that the resort made a name for itself. Built on the heights of the city, this palace of two hundred rooms attracted wealthy personalities from all over Europe. After the Second World War, the city of Cerdan regained a second wind thanks to the democratization of winter sports, but also thanks to its climatic vocation. Clean, dry air, especially beneficial to asthmatics. But Font-Romeu is also a sporting town. Its consecration came in particular from the creation of the climatic and sports high school as well as the national altitude training centre, attended by high-level athletes. Font-Romeu is of course a leading winter sports resort in the Pyrenean chain, with its 54 kilometres of downhill ski slopes, 111 for cross-country skiing and 23 ski lifts. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, running trail... so many activities to do and that are declined to infinity...

Grotte de l'Aguzou

Grotte de l'Aguzou - Escouloubre

The Aguzou cave is remarkable for its beauty and its mineral profusion. Unusual visits are proposed in the form of subterranean walks. The first part of the cave (Aguzou 1 on the map) was already known in prehistoric times because of its healing waters. It was developed as a thermal resort at the beginning of the 20th century. A second network of galleries was discovered in 1965. Another 6 km (4 miles) of breathtaking galleries were found, 1500 m (1600 yd) of which are now open to the public. The cave is still absolutely natural: there has been no artificial lighting installed, and no ostentatious arrangements. Visits are organized for small groups only, in the form of an underground hike...

Château
de Quérigut

Château de Quérigut

Château de Quérigut is located on a rocky outcrop in the village center Quérigut (Ariege).Castle Quérigut is mentioned in a text dating from 1208. The fifteenth century until the late seventeenth century, it was repeatedly besieged by the Spaniards. An attempt to take the castle fails in 1495. In 1589, the attackers managed to burn.
