Domaine Monastrel
Domaine Monastrel - Bize-Minervois
A.O.P. Minervois Dating from the 1920s, the Domaine Monastrel, a small, family estate, has produced renowned Minervois since the 1970s. Taken over in 2001 by œnologist Vincent Enaud and his wife, Brigitte, the vineyard is now being modernised and restructured. At present, it comprises 7 hectares of vines extending over cleared garrigue. Grapes are harvested by hand, and yields are limited to 35 hl/ha on average. The vines are planted on the south-eastern slopes of the Serre d'Oupia, the first foothills of the Montagne Noir (300 metres above sea level). Millennia of erosion have created gentle slopes formed of limestone scree at the foot of the Serre. These are gravel soils, deep and well-drained. The climate is favourable to late grape varieties such as Carignan, the traditional vine of the Minervois, and Mourvèdre, a native of Spain. Gravel and sandstone soils, ancient alluvial deposits of the river Cesse. Terraces and pebbly slopes facing south, south-east. The Domaine Monastrel is engaged in a programme of reasoned agriculture. Practices which promote disease prevention are favoured. Moreover, a well-tended vineyard naturally better resists parasites and pests. Grass is grown around the vines to make them hardier and obviate the need for weed-killers...

Le Somail

Le Somail

Le Somail is a port on the Canal du Midi built in the seventeenth century. It’s near the town of Ginestas in the Minervois and these days is a rapidly expanding village. Originally it was a small hamlet around the port itself but today it’s something of a tourist attraction. Other attractions include a brightly-painted barge which is a floating grocery store and an amazingly huge emporium of second-hand and antique books. They profess to be able to get any book you’d like to order – and in any language. It’s quite fascinating watching the pleasure craft go by whilst eating on the banks of the canal. We finished our day by taking a little motor boat (it was a little motor, as well as a little boat…) for an hour. The peace and stillness of the Canal were lovely but we did also enjoy squinting into the portholes of some of the more luxurious boats moored along the bank...

Les Appaloosas du Pech - Montouliers

We cater for all levels of rider and our horses are happy, well-cared for and kind. Many of our horses were bred and trained by us and most are beautiful “spotted” appaloosa horses, known for their hardiness, good sense and calmness. For longer trail rides, which can include beach riding and swimming on horseback, delicious meals are included in the prices. Accommodation overnight is in comfortable chalets or tents. There is something very special about swaying back and forth, side to side in a worn saddle, meandering through a cool forest on a hot summer’s day. We take our homestay students to visit a ranch and let them enjoy a one hour guided horseback ride through the hillside...

However, some exceptional pieces from around the world feature prominently. Three themes are currently mainly on display in our museum:
