Mont-Louis - City of the Sun King - The citadel is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mont-Louis, is one of nine towns entirely built by France's greatest military architect, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. In 1679, Louis XIV approved the financing of Mont-Louis, defending the passage to the Roussillon region of France. Inaugurated in 1681, Mont-Louis completed the line of defences stretching from Mediterranean Sea. Created from scratch by Vauban, it is a perfect example of 17th century fortified military architecture in which Vauban was able to express his creativity fully. Mont-Louis still has a military function today—the National Commando Training Centre — the Centre National d’Entraînement Commando – is housed in the citadel buildings. The history of the site is recounted in several guided tours of the citadel and the Puits des Forçats area, but you are also free to wander round at your leisure. The church has lots of baroque art treasures, while walking along the pathway at the foot of the ramparts, you can appreciate the genius of Vauban and the beauty of the site...

West of Perpignan (90 km), at an altitude of between 1,600 and 1,800 metres, facing due south, Font-Romeu is probably the Pyrenean resort best known to the French. Air conditioning was introduced at the very beginning of the 20th century, but it was in 1914, with the construction of the imposing Grand Hotel, that the resort made a name for itself. Built on the heights of the city, this palace of two hundred rooms attracted wealthy personalities from all over Europe. After the Second World War, the city of Cerdan regained a second wind thanks to the democratization of winter sports, but also thanks to its climatic vocation. Clean, dry air, especially beneficial to asthmatics. But Font-Romeu is also a sporting town. Its consecration came in particular from the creation of the climatic and sports high school as well as the national altitude training centre, attended by high-level athletes. Font-Romeu is of course a leading winter sports resort in the Pyrenean chain, with its 54 kilometres of downhill ski slopes, 111 for cross-country skiing and 23 ski lifts. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, running trail... so many activities to do and that are declined to infinity...
