Forteresse de Salses - Salses-le-Château

Come and visit Salses fortress, a unique example of military architecture combining aspects from medieval castles and modern bastions, located 15km from Perpignan. Come and discover the arresting dialogue between the 15th-century monument and installations by major contemporary artists.
Forteresse de Salses - Salses-le-Château
The fortress occupies a strategic site on the main road linking France and Spain over a narrow strip of land between the Corbières heights and Leucate lake. Constructed in a very short time between 1497 and 1504, its architecture has great majesty. The fortress of Salses is a good example of the transition between mediaeval castle - whose keep and towers at each corner of the long curtain walls it retains - and the modern geometric fortress sunk into the ground...
It owes its main innovative features to the necessity of adapting to the development of artillery that used metal cannonballs. The outer walls are 6 to 10 metres thick and are buried to half their height in a huge moat that could be flooded. Above the ground, the building rises to between three and seven floors served by a maze of internal passages.

Preceded by forward defence posts in the form of three cylindrical flanking towers with a pointed bastion linked to the central building by caponnières*, the site is a huge rectangle which looks as if it consists of a single particularly sturdy block.

The defensive system, in reality considerably more complex than it seems, is split into three independent sections running from east to west: the offices and service rooms arranged around a paved courtyard, the inner keep containing all the vital components of the fortress, with the keep dominating the whole and housing the governor’s lodging...

Muscats du Languedoc

A.O.P. Muscats du Languedoc

Muscat de Rivesaltes is an appellation for the historic vins doux naturels from a relatively large area of Roussillon, in southern France, covering a total of 99 communes, and the majority of the Pyrenees-Orientales administrative departement. It is the largest single sweet wine appellation in France. Muscat de Rivesaltes wines are made predominantly from Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains and Muscat d'Alexandrie in varying ratios, according to the style desired by the individual producer. Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains is used to bring aromas of exotic and citrus fruits while Muscat d'Alexandrie brings a deeper bouquet of white flowers and ripe stone fruit. Collectively the wines show aromas of peach, lemon, mango and occasionally fresher, herbaceous notes like mint. These aromas all change with ageing, (which take place mostly in the bottle to preserve the fresher aromas) and the wines take on aromas of honey and baked stone fruits...

Plage de la Franqui, Plage des Coussoules

Plage de la Franqui, Plage des Coussoules

La Franqui and its beach of Les Coussoules with 5 miles of fine sand has a claim to be the oldest seaside resort on the Languedoc coast. In the past it was a port of call for Phoenician and Roman galleys, today la Franqui is a Kingdom of kiteboarding, windsurfing and landsailing. Every genuine beach or seaside resort has been granted an exceptional location by the gods. La Franqui is no exception. The oldest seaside resort on the Langudoc coast nestles in a pine forest that backs onto the rocky plateau of Cap Leucate, at the foot of the only cliffs that exist between Marseille and Port-Bou. Fronting the resort is Coussoules beach with its 5 miles of fine sand that stretch lazily from la Grande Bleue to l’Etang de la Palme. As a backdrop, there is la Clappe massif, Mount Saint-Clair and Canigou peak. The array of colours is striking: the cerulean blue of the sea, the murky green of l’étang (lake), the golden yellow sand, the dazzling white of the cliffs and the green of the scrubland. Who could ask for more? The area was frequented formerly by Paul Gauguin, then by Charles Trenet and today by Jérôme Savary. This tiny resort which is a locality in the district of Leucate has managed to escape the ravages of concrete and modernity...

Muscat
de Rivesaltes

Muscat de Rivesaltes

Rivesaltes is the birthplace of the vin doux naturel, a creation of Arnaud de Villeneuve, the eminent 13th Century physician. It was he who discovered the process of halting the alcoholic fermentation by the addition of spirit to the must, thus giving rise to a new breed of wine. The technique has since been employed in the production of Rivesaltes, and over the ensuing centuries there have been numerous literary references to these fortified wines, which seem to have been highly regarded. Today there are 94 communes eligible to produce these wines, mostly in the Pyrénées-Orientales, although with nine situated in the Aude. The wines start off as principally red or white - although blending of red and white varieties, and subsequent barrel ageing, may influence the wine's true colour and eventual style significantly. Grenache Noir is the lead variety for the red wines, but this may be blended with a number of white varieties, including Grenache Blanc and Gris, Maccabeu and Tourbat...
