Minervois

A.O.P. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Homps

Homps

The Aude River and the Canal du Midi border the entire Minervois wine region. Homps is an attractive canal-side village, with good boating facilities, a range of good restaurants where local wines can be enjoyed and a 12th century Romanesque chapel. La Port Minervois is typically welcoming and enjoys an active local life. A great place to disembark and stretch your legs and a great base from which to explore the Minervois. You are at the foot of the Montagne Noir and Minerve (one of the prettiest villages in France) is an easy 15 minute drive. Lake Jouarres (Lac de Jouarres) is within walking distance, as well as the large village of Olonzac. Another attraction at the harbor is the building called le Chai de Homps. The Minervois is an established wine region, where the best winemakers come together to present their products, warmly welcome visitors to taste, enjoy and ask about the wines of Minervois and Minervois La Livinière. The wines of this sunny region are rich and generous. Le Chai de Homps is a great place to improve wine knowledge. Larent (seller and professional wine taster) can be trusted to ensure that visitors experience the real Minervois wine tasting experience...

Château
de la Redorte

Château de la Redorte - La Redorte

Built in the 18th century in the pretty village of La redorte, the Château de La Redorte invites its guests to relax within the elegant setting of a French château. A stone’s throw from the beautiful Canal du Midi and 30km from Carcassonne town, the property has been entirely renovated, both to restore its character and faded glamour, and to adapt it to long and short visits by guests. In the chateau’s unique and mysterious ‘Wine Tunnel’ (opening late June, 2016), which connects it to its own vineyards, you’ll find a chic wine bar serving the best vintages from the surrounding ‘Minervois’ wine region and beyond. And for those of you looking to truly relax, laze the day away by the pool surrounded by pine and olive trees, or take in a luxurious treatment at our ‘Vineyard Spa’. Venture out of the elegant parlours and gardens of the chateau, and explore the pretty village of La Redorte. Then take off for a day by the Med or exploring the nearby castle at Carcassonne...

Dolmen des Fades - Pépieux

Dolmen des Fades - Pépieux

The Dolmen des Fades is surrounded by a forest of pines a little away from the road on a hill at a place called "Morrel de las Fadas", which means in Occitan "Slope of the Fairies." The monument is the biggest dolmen long hallway (previously covered walkway) in the south of France. It was built, according to the archaeologists ca. 3500 BC (late Neolithic) by the people of la culture the Véraza: the remains of this culture were first found in 1903 at this place after plowing of the terrain and then in 1946 after meticulous excavations by Odette and Jean Taffanel a necropolis of the "Champs d'Urnes" revealed. They found include a dagger with brass rivets, a very original piece in the Olonzac Museum where it is stored. From Pépieux direction Minerve (take D 206), and after 2 km, at the area of Mignarde, take the first left (D 168); The Dolmen is shown on the left at km. It stands on a hill planted with pine trees, where you have a beautiful view...

Caunes-Minervois

Caunes-Minervois

Caunes-Minervois is an ancient village centered around an 8th-century abbey, sitting beside the Argent Double river where it comes down out of a Black Mountain valley and onto the plains. For visiting, Caunes-Minervois has some pretty bridges, a Medieval old-town with narrow streets and ancient houses, fountains, lavoirs and, of course, the 8th-century Benedictine Abbey. A possibly more important attraction for visitors are the several very good restaurants in the village. There's a beautiful red marble in this area, that was quarried here by the Romans and through Medieval times. The marble can be seen around the town, in building materials and sculptures scattered just about everywhere [horse-head photo]. For cafés in town, we liked the Grand Fountain Bar and Xxxx Hotel, with its shady terrace around the obelisk fountain, in the center of the village. Just down the Rue d'Aiguebelle from the café is the Jean Christophe Aterous wine shop, located in a cool, dark Medieval room where you can do wine tasting hosted by the elderly and very active nth-generation representative of the winery...
