Domaine du Verdouble - Cucugnan

I created "Domaine du Verdouble - Cucugnan" and settled in a private cellar in the city of Cucugnan, aware that I am the keeper of a rare and precious heritage: Terroir with exceptional wine qualities, unique historical environment, cultural environment actively supported by private actors and dynamic institutions.

Although 80% of my vines are in A.O.P. Corbières, I have chosen the appellation Vin de Pays de Cucugnan for all my wines (including Corbières). Long used as a "subclass" of the AOP, the name "Vin de Pays" now once again witnesses the peculiarities of a terroir.
Domaine du Verdouble - Cucugnan
Making a new wine means wanting to tell a new story. Cucugnan is the village of the story. From the top of the promontory, it watches over an exceptional site located in the heart of the wild Corbières, in the shadow of the Cathar castles of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse. Here it is nature that sets the pace and I, the winegrower, from pruning to harvesting, manage my vines while maturing my wines, carefully and without tricks. In this land of sun and wind, the grapes are harvested by hand, ripe and healthy. This is how natural wines are created, rich in the land and in the memory of mankind...

Le Verdouble, takes its name from a Gallic soil, the "brook of alder" (vernos / alder and dubron / brook). A turbulent, untamed and irrepressible river, the Verdouble has shaped the Corbières massif, hollowing out the rocks and drawing gorges from its source in Cubières to Estagel, where it joins the Agly. The wild character has shaped the landscapes and guided the history of the people of this country, from the distant prehistory (the Cauna de l'Arago in Tautavel) to today. Scrubland, oak, broom, fig trees, olive trees, almond trees color the land of Cucugnan today. There was wheat, olive oil (many remains of mills attest to this), and vines as far back as ancient times and the Middle Ages.
Domaine du Verdouble - Cucugnan
Throughout the seasons, the vines accentuate and shape this Mediterranean landscape. She applies successive accents from her palettes of green, yellow, brown and red. Clinging to slopes or covering the hollows of the valleys formed by the Verdouble, vines are today the essential part of the life and work of the people of this area in the Corbières. It marks the landscape by its presence but also by its absence. We can still guess it on the slopes, terraced vines, uprooted, abandoned, disappeared ... But never completely invisible, it leaves a lasting impression. She remembers us, hidden by the bushes, the undergrowth and the forest. We constantly guess it even where it is no longer...

Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the Cathar castles of the Languedoc located in the French Pyrénées in the commune of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, in the Aude département. It was associated with the Counts of Barcelona, later kings of Aragon. The name Peyrepetuse is derived from Pèirapertusa, Occitan, meaning Pierced Rock. The lower part of the castle was built on a strategic location by the kings of Aragon in the 11th Century and the higher part by the French King Louis IX later on, after the area was annexed to France. The two castles are linked together by a staircase. The castle lost importance as a strategic castle when the border between France and Spain was moved in 1659, causing the castle to be abandoned. The castle ruins are impressive, set high on a defensive crag. From the approach road it is difficult to see where the rock stops and the castle starts. The castle was built in the 11th century on a site dominating the Corbières and the sea. The main part, resembles the prow of a ship, running along the top of an 800m (2,600 ft) high crag. It houses the church of Sainte-Marie and the governor's residence...

Typical mediterranean plants grow on its steep slopes, such as evergreen oaks, jumper trees while Bonneli eagles soar over the winding narrow road that clings to the cliff.
