In 1997, we decided to buy a few plots in Tourouzelle. Tourouzelle is located in the south of France in the Languedoc. More particularly in the Minervois. The harvests are first vinified by the municipal cooperative, then we created the Domaine de Clarmon, named after our two daughters, Clara and Manon. Today, the vineyard extends over more than 10 Ha of grape varieties of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache. We have also developed an olive growing activity and, in 2006 1Ha of truffle oaks completes the Estate.

The vineyard is located on clay-limestone hillsides, and enjoys significant sunshine.

Our vines are cultivated with a permanent concern to develop a pleasant and healthy wine (constant concern to limit the use of chemicals or phytosanitary products). The harvest is carried out by hand to respect the integrity of the grape berry. If this is crushed, the juice oxidizes and the quality of the wine suffers.

The estate is made up of several plots with a total area of 10 hectares planted with Carignan, Syrah and Grenache, part of which is in the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée A.O.P. Minervois. The estate also has an olive growing activity, and in 2006 planted 1 ha of truffle oaks. These plots, distributed around the village of Tourouzelle, overlap with thickets of scrubland, pines, oaks and broom...

All our wines have been tasted and awarded medals in the most prestigious world competitions: Decanter, IWSC, Vinalises Internationales, Mondial de Bruxelles, Mondial des vins du Canada, Féminalises Beaune, Les grands vins du Languedoc Roussillon, Independent winegrowers, Challenge to the Best French Wines and Spririt in Honk-Kong and Miami. The wines of Domaine de Clarmon are regularly cited in the French and foreign press.

Our entire estate is planted with Lucca (of Italian origin), the main variety cultivated in Aude. The trees are still young and are not producing at full yield. Picked by hand, the harvest is intended for the production of olive oil and for consumption as table olives. This olive is characterized by a small crescent moon-shaped core and light flesh. Crunchy and fleshy, its flesh, fine and clear, delivers remarkable flavors of buttered hazelnut. Considered by gourmets to be undoubtedly the best of all, Lucca is the most popular of table olives.

Minervois

A.O.P. Minervois

The Minervois is one of the most ancient vineyards of the Mediterranean region. Indeed, its land was chosen by the Romans as providing ideal conditions for the first vines they planted in Languedoc Roussillon. Its name comes from the ancient city of Minerve, a stronghold built by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Since that time, many amphora shards and vestiges of cellars have been discovered, testimony to the importance of this vineyard. The region, austere in winter and redolent with sunshine in summer, has survived over the centuries its invasions by barbarians, Arabs and Christians. The essence of Minervois la Livinière, as in so many Midi appellations, is the blend; a marriage of different grape varieties that adds subtle nuance of flavour to the whole. Natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 12% without enrichment (so no chaptalisation) and maximum yield is a modest 45 hl/ha. Ageing may be in barrel or vat, and unlike basic Minervois, the wine must be bottled at source, so cannot be sent off to a négociant elsewhere in France...

Canal du Midi

Canal du Midi

Both the Romans and Leonardo Da Vinci already had the idea of creating a river connection between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. However, there was always a problem. For example, a way had to be found to overcome the 194-meter-high Seuil de Naurouze ridge. Over the centuries, the pressure increased. A canal had to be built so that the ships of the French fleet would not have to make the 2000 kilometer detour around enemy Spain. A canal connecting the Atlantic to the Mediterranean would not only be a huge time saver. They also avoided difficulties with the Spaniards. In the end it was an engineer from Béziers named Pierre-Paul Riquet who came up with the idea of diverting another river that originated on the ridge, the so-called Fontaine de la Grave. This would give a canal sufficient water supply, so that a canal could be dug around the ridge. King Louis XIV was aware of the canal's economic, political and military interests, which led to the construction of the Canal du Midi in 1666. Tens of thousands of workers worked for 14 years on the 328 structures that the Canal du Midi has, such as bridges, aqueducts and basins. The canal was completed in 1681. Pierre-Paul Riquet was never allowed to view the channel in its entirety. He died a year before delivery. The Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1969. The economic importance of the canal has since been minimized because commercial inland shipping has largely disappeared. Along the canal are several towns, monuments and harbors that are worth a visit. A nice experience is to explore the canal by boat, but a nice walk or bike ride along the Canal du Midi is also highly recommended!
