Fitou

Fitou A.O.P.

The first "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée" wine of Languedoc-Roussillon, is only produced in nine small communal areas: FITOU, Caves, Treilles, Leucate and La Palme, which are all beside the sea, between Narbonne and Perpignan, and Cascastel, Paziols, Tuchan, and Villeneuve in the Corbières-Massif. Documents going back as far as Philip Augustus, Louis XIII and Louis XIV bear witness to the long-standing reputation of Fitou wines.Rabelais particularly appreciated "vin de Palme" which now has the "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Fitou" label. he vineyards in Fitou are set out on shaly and argilocalcareous soils with exceptional exposure to the sun. The countryside, whose relief consists in parts of hills and slopes and in others of plateaux, has the advantage of a particularly dry climate and is often swept by a high wind, the "Cers"...

Château Champ des Soeurs - Fitou

A.O.P. Fitou A.O.P. Corbières  Laurent Maynadier set up Ch Champs des Soeurs in 1999, the fifteenth generation in a long line of vignerons that have been producing wine in Fitou since the 17th century. He and his wife, Marie Valette, run the 12 hectare estate together. They adhere to the principles of Terra Vitis which are guidelines set up to help growers protect biodiversity and traceability of their fruit. On south facing, rocky hillsides perdominantly made up of limestone and schist, Laurent plants his vines at particular angles to avoid soil erosion and plants indigenous trees around the vineyards to protect the soil and natural ecological boundaries. He practices minimal intervention. Based in the heart of Fitou which was granted the first AOC in the Langeudoc in 1948. The wine exudes wonderfully warm, ripe black forest fruit, with just a hint of rustic typicity. Enjoy now and for a number of years to come. When aiming for a proper balance of flavours, most French winemakers find that non- intervention is not an option when working with Carignan. Laurent Maynadier of Château Champ des Soeurs will do all his alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which can be the quickest way to end up with a reductive Carignan (that tell-tale smell of struck match) due to the juice not being able to breathe, but he says that it’s easy to deal with: ‘You just manage pump-overs as needed by moving the reductive part of the batch to mix with the oxidative at the top’...

Château
Féodal de Fitou

Château Féodal de Fitou

Fitou castle is a small, stone castle high on the hill above the village of Fitou, known in Europe for his wine. The village itself has dramatically changed last years, as the wines from the Fitou appellation got a better name, and more and more people from the North of France and even Germany, Switzerland or England, bought the houses in the region known for its beauty, closeness to the Mediterranean Sea and a nice climate. Several tiny town houses in Fitou have been nicely restored. You may see them walking through the village up to the castle. The castle’s museum, a slightly home made, may be attractive to visit by small children. They should not look only too close at the torture instruments. Still, they might like everyday court scenes and the alchemist’s workshop...

Amusement park: water chutes, children's games, etc... Aqualand - Leucate, which is full of slides of all kinds, welcomes all the family for a day devoted to water activities and fun. To make it easier to access the various attractions, the park has split the activities into three colour-coded categoriessimilar to the system used on ski slopes. Therefore, the green attractions are open to all visitors, and include activities like thalassatherapy in a space designed almost identically to Greek baths (the 'Bubble Bath'), and a relatively calm river descent in giant rubber rings. The red activities, on the other hand, will really get the adrenaline pumping, with faster and more unpredictable descents promising exciting new sensations...

Musée de Préhistoire de Tautavel

The site of Tautavel Cave (also called Caune de l'Arago) is an ancient karst cave in the Tautavel valley of France with over 35 feet of deposits containing over 40 very old stratified occupations, dated between 450,000 and 100,000 years before the present. Stone tools and faunal remains have been found in abundance. The oldest layers include several bone and bone fragments of several individuals of the so-called Tautavel Man, called Homo erectus tautavelensis. Archaeologist Henry de Lumley of the Institut de Paléontologie Humaine has been excavating the cave since 1964 and continues research today...

Plage de la Franqui,
Plage des Coussoules

Plage de la Franqui, Plage des Coussoules - Leucate

La Franqui and its beach of Les Coussoules with 5 miles of fine sand has a claim to be the oldest seaside resort on the Languedoc coast. In the past it was a port of call for Phoenician and Roman galleys, today la Franqui is a Kingdom of kiteboarding, windsurfing and landsailing. Every genuine beach or seaside resort has been granted an exceptional location by the gods. La Franqui is no exception. The oldest seaside resort on the Langudoc coast nestles in a pine forest that backs onto the rocky plateau of Cap Leucate, at the foot of the only cliffs that exist between Marseille and Port-Bou. Fronting the resort is Coussoules beach with its 5 miles of fine sand that stretch lazily from la Grande Bleue to l’Etang de la Palme. As a backdrop, there is la Clappe massif, Mount Saint-Clair and Canigou peak. The array of colours is striking: the cerulean blue of the sea, the murky green of l’étang (lake), the golden yellow sand, the dazzling white of the cliffs and the green of the scrubland. Who could ask for more? The area was frequented formerly by Paul Gauguin, then by Charles Trenet and today by Jérôme Savary. This tiny resort which is a locality in the district of Leucate has managed to escape the ravages of concrete and modernity...
