Château du Grand Caumont - Lézignan-Corbières

Since 1985, the Château du Grand Caumont AOC Corbières has been one of the jewels in the crown of the Corbières appellation and is steeped in history.

Three generations of the Rigal family have cultivated the land here and produced with passion their Corbières, Vins de Pays d'Oc and Vins de Pays de l'Aude wines. The estate has existed since Roman times when it was then known as "Villa Manzanetto".

It was then a mixed farming property and covered an area of nearly 1 000 hectares. It was subsequently renamed Grand Caumont, after the Mediterranean scrubland that overlooks the château. This hill, covered in thyme, rosemary and typical Mediterranean shrubs, is called "Capus Monti" meaning "Bald Mountain" and gave its name to the "Grand Caumont".

  Specialties

Situated in the heart of the Corbières, on the Lézignan Corbières terroir, Château du Grand Caumont is one of the largest estates in the appellation with 100 hectares of vines on 140 hectares of land and Mediterranean scrubland. Conditions in the Corbières region are ideal for cultivating vines.

The vineyard surrounds the Château and lies on terraces of clay-limestone and gravelly soils which act as a good filter. The dry, hot, sunny Mediterranean climate ensures a long growing cycle for the vines and the strong north wind that blows all year round keeps the need for chemical treatments to a minimum. These terroirs, used solely for vine growing, produce fragrant, aromatic wines that express the richness of the Languedoc sun. 70% of the wines produced at Château du Grand Caumont's are AOP wines and 30% Vins de Pays, IGP Oc and IGP Aude wines.

Already an experimental estate in the 19th century, the Grand Caumont vineyards have recently undergone numerous improvements in terms of vine plantation and wine-making techniques. The grapes grown are the traditional varieties of the Corbières.

Corbières

A.O.P. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....
