This listed 16th century chateau is located on extensive grounds on the banks of the River Aude. The ancient fortress-turned-hotel subtly blends medieval tradition with modern confort - and it has an excellent restaurant too (it is important that you reserve a table in advance).

Authentic atmosphere in a Renaissance decor!

The house was built by Jean de Joyeuse, first Governor of Narbonne and Lieutenant General in Languedoc, between 1540 and 1550, and his son, Guillaume III assumed the job of completing this magnificant chateau after he died.

With a beautiful courtyard where one can dine in the summer months, the castle is a very special place to stay. With a swimming pool and tennis court, the hotel is a perfect base to combine relaxation with good food.

Close to Cathares and 30 km to Carcassonne, there many cathedrals and historic monuments to visit. The Chateau does not have an elevator, so if you have a problem with stairs this may not be the best choice for you...
Our chef suggests his refined menus, combined with excellent wines, symbol of the authentic charm of our area.

Our hotel combines the medieval character of its rooms and junior suites and the modern comfort of its bathrooms.

To Jean de Joyeuse pair and chambrier, appointed Gorvernor of Narbonne and Lieutenant General of the Languedoc that the building of the Château was undertaken between 1540 and 1550.

An imposing castle with a striking silhouette built on the land of the Cathars. In the bedrooms of this 16th century listed building, a medieval atmosphere and modern comforts are skilfully combined. The same clever recipe works its magic in the reception rooms, the old chapel converted into a lounge and the dining rooms, where refined dishes await you. Nearby you can discover the Cathar castles and abbeys...

Anne de Joyeuse

Anne de Joyeuse - Limoux

A.O.P. Limoux In 1868 Docteur Guyot, who was at the forefront of initial modern scientific approaches to French viticulture, delivered his thoughts borne out of his study of the Limoux vineyards: « It’s through it’s red wines that Limoux shines and should rightfully figure among the list of good wines”. He thus bestowed the red wines of Limoux with these noble credentials. From the same belief the Cave Anne de Joyeuse was founded in 1929 to vinify the red wines of Limoux and the Upper Aude valley. The winegrowers, realising over time the exceptional quality of their terroir, started planting the first noble grape varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in 1972. Thus, the Cave Anne de Joyeuse became the first and most important Southern French vineyard to commit 100% to individual site selection based on terroir. It lead to the establishment of its white wines as AOC Limoux White in 1989 and its red wines as AOC Limoux Red in 2004. The geoclimatic studies undertaken in 1978 uncovered three main zones and different soil types. The vineyards of the Cave Anne de Joyeuse are divided between these three regions around Limoux...

Château d'Antugnac

Château d'Antugnac - Antugnac

A.O.P. Limoux  Within the vast wineyard of the Languedoc, the Château d'Antugnac now operates 95 hectares on the Limoux appellation area in the Haute-Vallée de l'Aude. This specific region is located at the extreme south-west of the Languedoc vineyards, at the foot of the Pyrenees in a zone where climatic influences, Mediterranean and Atlantic, blend together. This is a magical place and it seduced on the spot the Collovray & Terrier, enamored of the grand landscapes and the Cathar relief. In the middle of other rather exotic grape varieties for people born in the Mâconnais, we find in the Aude Valley the famous Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, icons of Burgundy: that is a considerable argument to conquer these new terroirs and learn from their specificities. It doesn't boil down to the blanquette in Limoux! For a long time in the shadow of the sparkling wines -the famous Blanquette de Limoux whose date of birth goes back to 1531-the still wines from the Limoux region have managed to opt for originality based on the coexistence between the Atlantic and Mediterranean grape varieties and on the local microclimate. Here, the vines are planted on terroirs whose altitude varies between 200 to 600 meters, which allows to temper the summer heats. This zone of climatic confluence enjoys an optimum sunshine due to the Mediterranean influence, cool nights because of the proximity of the Pyrenees, a good ventilation generated by the Tramontane and a balanced rainfall due to the ocean influences...

Bugarach

Bugarach

Shrowded in mystery, myth and legend, the peak of Mount Bugarach majestically dominates the wider area around Rennes-le-Château. The farming village is in the region of the Cathar castles, situated on spectacular rocky outcrops. Regarded as heretics by the Catholic Church, Cathars sought refuge in these castles in the 13th century when Pope Innocent III launched a full scale crusade against them. The village lies next to the Pic de Bugarach, a rocky peak which, at 1230 metres, is the highest point of the Corbières range of hills. The peak is dwarfed however by the nearby Pyrenees and offers splendid views of the range. Made of limestone with galleries of caves beneath it, the peak is a geological oddity, since its top layers are millions of years older than its bottom ones, making it an 'upside down mountain'. The peak of Bugarach has been shrouded in mystery, with various claims that it houses aliens in cavities beneath the rock. The internet abounds with tales of the late President François Mitterrand being curiously heliported onto the peak, of mysterious digs conducted by the Nazis and later Mossad, the Israeli secret services. There is talk of the area, near to the Cathar castles, holding the Holy Grail or the treasure of the Templars. A visit to Bugarach is said to have inspired Steven Spielberg in his film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind – although the actual mountain he used is Devil's Tower in Wyoming...

Maison Déodat Roché

Maison Déodat Roché - Arques

Arques is the village which saw the birth of Déodat Roché (1877-1978), the historian of Catharism. Deodat Roche, founder of the Cahiers d'Etudes Cathares and a twentieth-century magistrate of Limoux and Carcassonne who was removed from his position by the Vichy government for his interest in religion and spirituality, wanted to lay bare to his contemporaries the light which the Cathars had tried to reveal to the medieval world. A self-proclaimed neo-Cathar, Roche believed deeply in the need to uncover the true history of the Cathars, which had been obscured by an intolerant medieval Church. His house is the location for a permanent exhibition devoted to Catharism and its interpretations...
