Château de Quérigut - Quérigut

Château de Quérigut is located on a rock in the village center of Quérigut (Ariege). Quérigut Castle is mentioned in a text from 1208. From the fifteenth century to the end of the seventeenth century, it was repeatedly besieged by the Spaniards. An attempt to take the castle failed in 1495. In 1589 the attackers managed to burn it. In 1607 Louis XIII establishes a garrison there. It will be removed by order of the State Council of April 25, 1638. The castle was burned again in 1676. In 1709, Louis XIV ordered the restoration of the castle and re-established a garrison. It remains today a huge castle tower in ruins from what was the old dungeon.

Château de Quérigut dominates the village of the same name (1240 meters) and presents only the ruins of the thick-walled houses. The castle is mentioned in 844, but the buildings still visible date probably from the 12th and 13th centuries. Also called Donézan Castle (or Donnézan, as well as the surrounding region), it belongs to Raymond-Roger de Foix shortly before the Albigensian Crusade. In fact, it was inherited from the original lord, Bernard d'Alion (lord of Usson) by King Peter II of Aragon, after his refusal to respect feudal rights.
The castle appears in the documentation in 1208 during the transfer of the rights of Donezan, who belonged to the king of Aragon, from the family of So to the counts of Foix. It is likely that the castle was originally built by the king of Aragon like that of Puyvalador in 1192. Their construction is intended to fix the population around the royal authority, even if in reality he is a squire exercising rights in the name of the king. The castle of Quérigut, of which only the main tower (or dungeon) remains today, was much larger. In addition to the Franco-Spanish border that merges into the Col des Hares, the raids on both sides led to the demise of the two strongholds of Quérigut and Puyvalador: looting, fires and various abuses damaged the walls. In 1710 it was declared "irreparable", its dismantling is therefore inevitable and little by little the inhabitants of the village will reuse the materials to build stone houses.

Why a castle on this spot?
* The village is located at an altitude of 1200m and 4km from the old border with Spain.
* It was clearly a strategic location.

The discovery
* The ruin of the castle hangs at the top of the rocky hill.
* It overlooks the village built in a circle.
* It is actually the keep or main tower that we see today, the castle had a larger area.
* You just have to look at the different rock and earth layers to realize this.
* Each rock section was used to build storage buildings or rustic homes.
* As is often the case with castles in mountainous regions, the ruin hugs the rock.
* From the village car park, the walls appear high and impregnable. But how am I going to climb up now?
