The Cathar castle Queribus in the south
of France (located in the heart of the Corbieres) still stands today as an impressive memorial to the Albigensian crusade of the thirteenth-century. It was only in 1255 that this mountain top fortress fell to French Catholic knights.
Queribus held out an additional eleven years beyond the more widely known Cathar castle at Montsegur, which gave Queribus the distinction of being the last of the Cathar castles. As a result, in many ways the capture of Queribus represents the end of the organized Cathar movement and is sometimes referred to as "the last bastion."
Geographically, the castle is high and isolated.
The exhausting hike up the mountain, a few hundred steep meters, that is necessary to reach the castle is rewarded by the stunniing military architecture of Queribus. The gothic style hall and its polygonal keep are especially worth seeing... |

As one examines the castle, most of which is well preserved, the heavy winds howling throughout the structure provide an almost surreal effect. From Queribus, one can look out over the mountain range and see the remains of another Cathar Castle, Peyrepertuse, in the distance. Queribus is, in the opinion of the editor of this website, perhaps the most interesting historical place one can visit in relation to the Cathar movement or the Albigensian Crusade.
In 1255, the Castle was governed by Chabert de Barbaira. In the wake of the fall of Montsegur in 1244, the castle Queribus came to house a number of dispossessed knights and Cathars who found themselves overwhelmed by the Catholic presence in the region. The successful siege and surrender of the castle in 1255 concluded the military phase of the Albigensian Crusade. Chabert de Barbaira was captured and imprisoned, but ultimately released and possibly may have lived the rest of his life in Barcelona. The crusade had crushed the independence of southern France and resulted in the placement of northern nobility in positions of authority throughout the region...

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

Château Trillol |

|
 |
|
|
Owned by the Sichel family since 1990, Château Trillol is perched high up in the foothills of the Pyrenees at an altitude of 400 metres (1,312ft) in the AOC Corbières winegrowing region. The mysterious Cathar castles close by, with their thousand years of history, add to the majesty of this outstanding, unspoiled natural environment.
Down in the valley, the picturesque and magnificently restored village of Cucugnan was made famous by Alphonse Daudet’s well-known story, Le Curé de Cucugnan (The Priest of Cucugnan). A unique place to visit!
The Sichel family has undertaken a long-term project of expansion and replanting and the estate now boasts 40 hectares of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan in two distinct terroirs,Termenès and Quéribus.
The altitude of the vines (1,312ft and 656ft) means that the grapes ripen slowly, giving them time to absorb the peppery aromas of the neighbouring garrigue scrubland, and to develop length and complexity around a magnificently balanced structure...
