Château de Puivert - Puivert

Puivert Castle, locally known as Château de Puivert, lies near the village with the same name, west of the town of Quillan in the Languedoc-Roussillion region in France.

Of all the Cathares castles, Puivert Castle certainly is one of the best preserved. It was built in the 14th century.
Château de Puivert - Puivert
With its 35 meters high keep in which four splendid rooms are superimposed, its 6 towers incorporated in its enclosure wall, this castle dominates the old glacial lake of Puivert below. One of the rooms in the keep has very nice carvings of 8 characters with medieval musical instruments on its walls.
You can climb to the top of the keep which offers a great view on the Quercorb plain to north, to the west of Montségur Castle with the summits of the Pyrenees behind it and to the east of the peak of Bugarach...
The castle, 600 meters (1970 feet) above sea level, is sited on a green hill top (Puig-Vert). Perhaps the significance of the name is that most castles in the area are not on green hill tops, but rocky mountain tops.

At the start of the Wars against the Cathars, the so-called Albigensian Crusade, Puivert's seigneur was Bernard de Congost. His wife Alpaïs had become a Parfaite before her death just a year earlier in 1208.
Château de Puivert - Puivert
In November 1210 the Castle was besieged (just after the fall of Termes) by Simon de Montfort, and fell after three days. The dispossessed Congost family carried on the fight against the invaders.

The castle was classified as an Historic Monument (Monument historique) in 1907...

 Fontaine de Fontestorbes - Beslesta

Fontaine de Fontestorbes - Beslesta

The Fontaine de Fontestorbes is the karst spring par excellence. It takes the term intermittent really serious: it changes its production every 30 minutes from around 50 l/s to 1,800 litres per second and back. But lets start from the beginning. Fontaine de Fontestorbes is a rather typical kasrt spring, where a cave river reaches the surface out of a cave. The portal of the cave is located really nice below a white limestone cliff. It show the typical behaviour, low water in winter, high production during snow melt in spring and heavy rains, again low production during summer and autumn. But one thing is special, there is an additional change in production, which changes extremly fast. In an hour the production changes from almost zero to full production and back. This means, the cave is almost half an hour dry, and visitors can easily walk in, but then the water rises and the cave is filled with water. The people inside have to wait until the flow drops again, about half an hour later...

Departure in front of the old station of Chalabre. Take the Voie Verte to the south. At the end of Chalabre, cross the old bridge over the l'Hers. Follow the Voie Verte and cross over another small bridge over the Hers. At the place called la Forge leaving the Voie Verte and take right towards Centre d'Art contemporain follow through La Croix d'Ourjac to Sainte-Colombe de l'Hers. "We had taken a lunch at Le Refuge Gourmand on the way back from a visit to one of the Cathar castles! The reception was very pleasant, the hostess is very friendly, it's like being welcomed by friends. The sangria was delicious. We ordered two combination platters, for my husband veal with morel sauce, a true pleasure and for me a stuffed squid in aioli tomato sauce served with french fries, green beans, tomatoes provencale, a real treat! If then the dessert ..... these alone are worth the trip! Very good value for money and great generosity and much more ... We have enjoyed!!!!"
