Château de Puilaurens - Puilaurens

The castle of Puilaurens (also written Puylaurens) is mentioned for the first time early in the XIIIth century.
It was a shelter for cathar people from 1241 to 1246. The date of its surrender to the royal troops is not known precisely, probably around 1250.
Château de Puilaurens - Puilaurens
As several other castles around, it was integrated by the King Saint Louis in the defensive plan of the border with the Aragon Kingdom. After the treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, that has fixed definitively the border, the castle was downgraded and have been occupied by only a little garrison.
This castle is located at an altitude of almost 700 metres and overlooks the village of Lapradelle, in the midst of a pine forest.  Access is via a pathway with chicanes preceded by a barbican...
Puilaurens castle is one of the most impressive in the Cathar region and is a short drive away from Axat and the river Aude. It continued to be a refuge for the Cathars even after the massacre at Montsegur up until 1250.

In 1255 the French king ordered that Puilaurens castle be fortified as a frontier citadel, and it became the strongest bastion facing Spain in France and the Pyrenees.

From Quillan, the road runs south through the incredibly narrow défilé de Pierre-Lys to the Pont d'Aliès before swinging 17km east to the village of Lapradelle and the first of the castles, the Château de Puilaurens.

You can either drive up or there's a shorter and fairly gentle path from the hamlet of PUILAURENS. The castle is perched on top of a high, wooded hill at 700m, its fine crenellated walls built around the very top of the rock outcrops...

Bugarach

Bugarach

Shrowded in mystery, myth and legend, the peak of Mount Bugarach majestically dominates the wider area around Rennes-le-Château. The farming village is in the region of the Cathar castles, situated on spectacular rocky outcrops. Regarded as heretics by the Catholic Church, Cathars sought refuge in these castles in the 13th century when Pope Innocent III launched a full scale crusade against them. The village lies next to the Pic de Bugarach, a rocky peak which, at 1230 metres, is the highest point of the Corbières range of hills. The peak is dwarfed however by the nearby Pyrenees and offers splendid views of the range. Made of limestone with galleries of caves beneath it, the peak is a geological oddity, since its top layers are millions of years older than its bottom ones, making it an 'upside down mountain'. The peak of Bugarach has been shrouded in mystery, with various claims that it houses aliens in cavities beneath the rock. The internet abounds with tales of the late President François Mitterrand being curiously heliported onto the peak, of mysterious digs conducted by the Nazis and later Mossad, the Israeli secret services. There is talk of the area, near to the Cathar castles, holding the Holy Grail or the treasure of the Templars. A visit to Bugarach is said to have inspired Steven Spielberg in his film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind – although the actual mountain he used is Devil's Tower in Wyoming...

This castle is located at an altitude of almost 700 metres and overlooks the village of Lapradelle, in the midst of a pine forest. The first records of the castle date from 958. Since it played a major part in defending the former frontier between France and the kingdom of Aragon, it can boast the full range of medieval military architecture. Access is via a pathway with chicanes preceded by a barbican. The Château de Puilaurens (Occitan: lo Castèl de Puèg-Laurenç) is one of the Cathar Castles of the Languedoc in what is now the South of France. It is located in the commune of Lapradelle-Puilaurens in the Aude département. The castle here had belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuxa before it was acquired by the King of Aragon in 1162. As Aragonese property it was outside the territory ravaged by the Crusaders during the Cathar wars. Like Queribus it therefore provided a refuge for those fleeing from the invading forces. Those who took refuge there included both Cathars and faidits, that is to say those who had forfeited their property because of their opposition to the invaders. These faidits included high nobles, such as Guillaume de Peyrepertuse...
