Sandwiched between two walls of folded Cretaceous limestone in the Pyrenees, Corbieres and Capron, the land of mountains Duilhac only. As its inhabitants were given the nickname "Skip-rock" (rock-jumping).
Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village of Duilhac, a small circus which has focused almost all plots currently under vines. Above, the slopes of Tabourc or Peyrepertuse, are the domain of sheep and bees.
The village retains its medieval center called the "Fort" corresponding to the walls of the fortified town probably in the fourteenth century. Remains of the polygonal enclosure are still visible particularly in the south of the church where you can see a fragment of wall with an arched door with voussoirs well matched to a blond sandstone.
In the retaining wall of the ramp of the "Fort" is placed a cross of mission wrought iron, realized as evidenced by the inscription Pla Alexis, the village blacksmith, in 1855. It is a cross "to insults" with the instruments of the Passion of Christ, spear, pincers....
The Falconner Patrice Potier and his assistants feature birds of prey, raptors and owls as the white tailed eagle and the peregrine falcon and much more, flying free. Don't miss their great and professional show.
(falconry shows from
26th of July to 10th of August).

Les Gorges du Verdouble - Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse

Cucugnan village, one of the most picturesque
villages in all of France..

Les Gorges de Galamus
Saint-Paul-
de-Fenouillet
Agly Fenouillèdes |
|
This Mediterranean village in the south of France, its vineyards nestled between sea and mountains, stands on the road to the Cathar castles. St Paul enjoys the privilege of being irrigated by two rivers the Agly and the Boulzane. They have dug their way through the last strong holds of the Corbières mountains creating two natural wonders: The Gorges de Galamus (North) suitable for canyoning etc and The Clue de la Fou (South) with its Via Ferrata. An old Roman town, St. Paul, main centre for the Canton, is home to an architectural curiosity namely the chapel which is an ancient collegiate dating from the thirteenth century, and rebuilt in the seventeenth century. In its tradition winemaking and industry, St Paul is moving gradually towards green tourism and outdoor sports, taking advantage of its unique environment...

Le Château de Peyrepertuse |
|
|
 |
|
|
Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the Cathar castles of the Languedoc located in the French Pyrénées in the commune of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, in the Aude département. It was associated with the Counts of Barcelona, later kings of Aragon.
The name Peyrepetuse is derived from Pèirapertusa, Occitan, meaning Pierced Rock. The lower part of the castle was built on a strategic location by the kings of Aragon in the 11th Century and the higher part by the French King Louis IX later on, after the area was annexed to France. The two castles are linked together by a staircase. The castle lost importance as a strategic castle when the border between France and Spain was moved in 1659, causing the castle to be abandoned.
The castle ruins are impressive, set high on a defensive crag. From the approach road it is difficult to see where the rock stops and the castle starts. The castle was built in the 11th century on a site dominating the Corbières and the sea.
The main part, resembles the prow of a ship, running along the top of an 800m (2,600 ft) high crag. It houses the church of Sainte-Marie and the governor's residence...

The Cathar castle Queribus in the south of France (located in the heart of the Corbieres) still stands today as an impressive memorial to the Albigensian crusade of the thirteenth-century. It was only in 1255 that this mountain top fortress fell to French Catholic knights. Queribus held out an additional eleven years beyond the more widely known Cathar castle at Montsegur, which gave Queribus the distinction of being the last of the Cathar castles. As a result, in many ways the capture of Queribus represents the end of the organized Cathar movement and is sometimes referred to as "the last bastion." Geographically, the castle is high and isolated. The exhausting hike up the mountain, a few hundred steep meters, that is necessary to reach the castle is rewarded by the stunniing military architecture of Queribus. The gothic style hall and its polygonal keep are especially worth seeing...
