Château de Fontarèche is situated just north of Lezignan-Corbières, an estate of 200 hectares owned by the same family since 1682. Chateau Fontareche is a historic chateau located in the Corbieres hills in Southern France. The estate forms a perfect square of 200 ha around the buildings. Here, almost always, one can say, 160 hectares of vines classified half in AOP Corbières and half in Vin de Pays. Its situation makes it a Castle where it is good to live. The Canal du Midi, the medieval city of Carcassonne, the Cathar castles or the Mediterranean Sea are only a few kilometers away.

A unique collection of grape varieties... The alternation of terroirs makes it possible to work on a great diversity of grape varieties. 17 are present on the property. Traditional Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre for red, Picpoul noir for our rosé and Roussane, Grenache blanc and Macabeu for white. But certain terroirs of the property also allow us to successfully reveal the qualities of great grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier, Vermentino and Colombard for white, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Caladoc for red...

Chateau Fontarèche, its name comes from the Latin word "fonto erecto" (the fountain that erupts) and is one of the most historic areas of the Languedoc appellation. There can be evidence found in the inventory writings of the Archbishop of Narbonne, already talking about this domaine in 1350. In 1682 the castle of Fontarèche, together with the winery, becomes property of the family Mignard, whose descendants, the family Lamy, are still owning the domain today. The castle is located in the Languedoc region, just a few kilometers from Lezignan-Corbieres. The vineyards of Fontareche form a perfect square of 200 ha around the chateau. This region is a dream to live in. The Canal du Midi, the medieval city of Carcassonne, the ancient Cathar castles and the Mediterranean Sea are just a few kilometers away. The diversity of terroirs ensures that this area has a huge diversity of grape varieties. 17! grape varieties are planted here: Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre for the reds, Picpoul Noir for the rosé and Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Macabeo for the whites. But some of their soils lend themselves exceptionally well to plant atypical varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier, Vermentino and Colombard for whites. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante and Caladoc for the reds.

Corbières

A.O.P. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

Le Pont de Répudre - Ventenac-en-Minervois

Le Pont de Répudre, a historical work par excellence, it is near the village of Paraza, in a beautiful natural setting. This is the first canal bridge built in France, the second in the world. It is the only one built by Riquet, the others having been built later, most by Vauban. Travelers stopped to see the unusual sight while boats passing over a bridge. The canal bridge, begun in 1676, has held 400 people on its site. The amount of gravel carried by the torrent still show the need to cross the river under the Channel. In the middle of the façade, a marble plaque placed in the last century by the heirs of Paul Riquet recalls that he was the inventor. The bridge arch which was damaged during floods in December 1999 has been beautifully repaired. A magical place!

Le Somail

Le Somail

Le Somail is a port on the Canal du Midi built in the seventeenth century. It’s near the town of Ginestas in the Minervois and these days is a rapidly expanding village. Originally it was a small hamlet around the port itself but today it’s something of a tourist attraction. Other attractions include a brightly-painted barge which is a floating grocery store and an amazingly huge emporium of second-hand and antique books. They profess to be able to get any book you’d like to order – and in any language. It’s quite fascinating watching the pleasure craft go by whilst eating on the banks of the canal. We finished our day by taking a little motor boat (it was a little motor, as well as a little boat…) for an hour. The peace and stillness of the Canal were lovely but we did also enjoy squinting into the portholes of some of the more luxurious boats moored along the banks…

Auberge du Somail

Auberge du Somail - Saint-Nazaire-d'Aude

Auberge du Somail, A restaurant on the waterfront, overlooking the typical Somail bridge and under the generous shade of century-old plane trees... The perfect setting for lounging on the terrace and watching the boaters on the Canal du Midi go by! The "Bistro" décor matches the standards of the dishes made using fresh local products only, as is the serene atmosphere that reigns over this place. On the menu: Gazpacho of seasonal vegetables, Cuttlefish with parsley, Prawns in pesto, Skirt steak, home-made foie gras platter. Le Somail is undoubtedly the most picturesque village along the stretch of the Canal du Midi. This 18th-century hamlet with its arched bridge, with old stone houses, overlooking the quays terraces full of colorful restaurants, art galleries and a floating grocery store where the mail boats, which carried to Toulouse in 4 days of Agde, had their stop. The travelers used these stops to get from one city to travel to the other, a much easier way than an overland journey. At each gate they had to transfer to another boat. Loaded like mules they had upstairs and downstairs...
