Montpellier

Montpellier

Montpellier really is special. What’s more – very few people outside France have understood just what a fantastic city this is. Broad boulevards lined with shady plane trees, a huge car-free central square laid out in the 1700s surrounded by elegant balustraded buildings, even a vast triumphal arch – you name it, Montpellier’s got it. Oh, and it’s just minutes away from the beach, too. If you're in the market for chic boutiques, designer wine bars, electronic music and art house films, then Montpellier is the place for you. Languedoc-Roussillon’s capital city is arguably the chicest spot on France’s south coast, and it certainly pulls in the punters. An extra 18,000 folk make Montpellier their home every year, and the burgeoning student population (an estimated 70,000) means that the nightlife, fashions and café culture tend to cater to Bright Young Things, with a reasonable helping of up-market wine bars, modern restaurants and smart stores targeting the sizeable community of lawyers and doctors. Visitors tend to start their Montpellier sightseeing on the central expanse of Place de la Comédie, seduced by its café terraces and imposing, 19th century opera house. All well and good, but to escape the gawking tourists and Saturday afternoon out-of-towners, hot foot it up the pedestrian-only sweep of Montpellier's rue de la Loge into the ancient, most attractive part of town known as l’Ecusson...

Pézenas

Pézenas

Pézenas sits on the plains between the Haut (“Upper”) Languedoc National Park and the Mediterranean coastline. It is a mere twenty minutes from the clean sandy beaches of the Herault, half an hour from the beautiful rugged hill country inland and half an hour from what is surely one of the world’s most attractive cities – Montpellier. Pézenas has the feel of a small town with plenty of charm. Take a walk around the back streets and you will wander through medieval alleyways and squares bordered by tall elegant individualised houses replete with charm. There is a beautifully preserved Jewish ghetto settlement dating back to the middle ages, and the town is famed for being the dwelling place of French writer Moliere. Today there are still a number of writers who live locally...

Écluses de Fonsérannes

Écluses de Fonsérannes - Béziers

It is in Béziers that is the major work of the Canal du Midi: Les 9 Écluses de Fonséranes. A water of 312 meters which allows barges and boats to cross a drop of 25 meters. For the time, an extraordinary technical feat performed by Paul Riquet as a tribute to his hometown. Musée
des dinosaures
et de la Préhistoire
de Mèze

Musée des dinosaures et de la Préhistoire de Mèze

The largest Museum-Park in Europe devoted to dinosaurs in the middle of an outstanding paleontological site. An extraordinary voyage in time. The remains of an extremely large dinosaur of the Iguanodon family have been discovered here. It could be a new species! July 2004 : New Museum-Park "Origins and Evolution of man" In 1996, an outstanding paleontological site consisting of numerous dinosaur eggs and fossilised bones was discovered in Mèze (Hérault County), 20 miles from Montpellier in Languedoc-Roussillon, in the south of France To protect this remarkable heritage, an open-air museum was founded in the heart of the site. Extensive paleontological digs and research are continuing in the area. The originality of this approach is to offer both a cultural centre and a teaching structure at the same time, thus taking due account of the interests of researchers and the general public. The Mèze Museum-Park tells the story of dinosaurs from their origin to their extinction, explaining all we have learnt about them from their discovery to the most recent scientific research. Designed to cater for all types of public, this top quality Museum site encourages visitors of all ages to observe, understand and participate in what is a new, highly original concept, an open-air museum...

Le Massif
de la Clape

Le Massif de la Clape - Narbonne (Plage)

The Massif de la Clape – ‘stone’ in local dialect - was, until recent geological time, an actual island. This insularity, still apparent in the landscape, has given rise to a particularly rich and original variety of plant and animal life. Today, the La Clappe Heights remain one of those unusual, spellbound places where modem man can still feel, with ahnost every step he takes, the imprint of his long-gone ancestors. The Oeil Doux is a natural waterhole surrounded by cliffs with an abrupt eastern face overhanging the surface 130 feet below (40m). The cliff is made of hard fissured limestone whose crevices are full of red clay; it was formed during the middle geological era. The north side, less steep, is made of marly limestone from an older geological age and is particularly rich in fossile deposits, notably Orbolitines (Mesorbitolna texana), Brachypodes, Lamellibranches and sea urchins (dating from the Clansayesian period). The presence of this hole at this site can be explained by the fragility of the wider area which displays many faults; two of them major. The water in the hole is salty : the salinity, as well as the level, varies with the rainfall and the movements of the Mediterranean just a mile (1,500m) away. The whole zone is part of a submerged karstic formation...
