Campsite Rives des Corbières - Port Leucate

Port Leucate is part of the major Languedoc development which took place during the sixties and seventies and it is now a thriving resort.

The campsite is situated on the old coast road into Port Leucate between the Etang de Salas and the beach, 800 m. from the centre of the town and port and only 150 m. from the beach.

A mixture of trees provide reasonable shade for the 305 pitches, on good-sized sandy plots, all with 6A electricity connections.

About 90 are used for mobile homes. With no tour operators this is a good value site, essentially French...

You don't always have to cook, as the camp site has a snack bar and pizzeria. The camp site also supplies fresh bread.

You can also use the internet, as the camp site has one or more computers with an internet connection and you can access the internet with your own laptop in 80% of the camp site...

Corbières

A.O.C. Corbières

The Corbières is one of the wildest areas of France with one of the lowest population densities. It is picturesque with wine growing areas alternating with garigue and mountainous countryside. It is located mainly in the Aude département and partly in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. The River Aude borders the Corbières to the west and north. To the south is the River Agly and to the east the the Mediterranean Sea. The name Corbières comes from "cor" a pre-Celtic word meaning "rock" and "berre" from the River Berre which runs through Durban. The eastern part of the Corbières with its Etangs, borders the the Mediterranean Sea and is called the Corbières maritimes. It has its own distinctive climate and characteristic vegetation known as thermomediterranean vegetation...

Fitou

Fitou A.O.C.

The first "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée" wine of Languedoc-Roussillon, is only produced in nine small communal areas: FITOU, Caves, Treilles, Leucate and La Palme, which are all beside the sea, between Narbonne and Perpignan, and Cascastel, Paziols, Tuchan, and Villeneuve in the Corbières-Massif. Documents going back as far as Philip Augustus, Louis XIII and Louis XIV bear witness to the long-standing reputation of Fitou wines.Rabelais particularly appreciated "vin de Palme" which now has the "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Fitou" label. he vineyards in Fitou are set out on shaly and argilocalcareous soils with exceptional exposure to the sun. The countryside, whose relief consists in parts of hills and slopes and in others of plateaux, has the advantage of a particularly dry climate and is often swept by a high wind, the "Cers"...

Musée de Préhistoire de Tautavel

The site of Tautavel Cave (also called Caune de l'Arago) is an ancient karst cave in the Tautavel valley of France with over 35 feet of deposits containing over 40 very old stratified occupations, dated between 450,000 and 100,000 years before the present. Stone tools and faunal remains have been found in abundance. The oldest layers include several bone and bone fragments of several individuals of the so-called Tautavel Man, called Homo erectus tautavelensis. Archaeologist Henry de Lumley of the Institut de Paléontologie Humaine has been excavating the cave since 1964 and continues research today....
