Blason de Chalabre
Lac de Montbel is a just a few miles outside Chalabre.

A large water reservoir built over 20 years ago, it is ideal for swimming, wind-surfing and meeting up with the colourful locals...
  Specialities

The Lac de Montbel is a reservoir 5 minutes from Chalabre, which is a popular location for watersports and swimming.

It is located at Sainte-Colombe-sur-l'Hers on the border between the Ariège and Aude départements of southwestern France.

The flooded hillsides are still evident when the water level drops, revealing tree stumps and the thick sticky clay (marl) so typical of the Ariège.

On quiet hot summer days the water takes on a beautiful turquoise colour which is very photogenic.

The area is relatively undeveloped and quiet and privacy are a great attraction. The mountains of the Pyrenees are visible in the background.

Malepère

A.O.C. Malepère

The Malepère region was awarded AOC status on May 2nd 2007. It is a hilly area south-west of the city of Carcassonne which is included in the appellation along with 31 other towns and villages. Although the area claims a great history of wine making it was in the 1970’s that the vineyards began to be replanted and VDQS status was granted. VDQS is the intermediary wine designation between Vin de Pays and AOC and is a testing ground for would-be AOC’s to prove that wines from all the producers share a common personality before they can be awarded full AOC status. Although an obscure region the Malepère is well worth a visit and offers a very different terrain to the more recognizable Languedoc appellations. There are many interesting medieval circular villages to visit. They were built this way to form ramparts to act as protection for the inhabitants. The Cathar religion was strong here and the area is immersed in history and folklore...

Limoux

A.O.C. Limoux

Limoux is best known for its sparkling wine, Blanquette de Limoux. This is reputed to be the oldest sparkling wine in France and dates back to 1531 when Benedictine monks from Saint Hilaire Abbey discovered that the wine they had laid down had fermented and formed bubbles. This was the beginning of Limoux’s bubbly - the Blanquette de Limoux which was the first AOC to be created in the Languedoc area. The process (the locals say) was stolen by Dom Perignon who went on to create ‘champagne‘. however the Limoux sparkling wine is a very high quality champagne substitute and Crémant, which was developed in 1990, has a top class reputation. Now a prestigious event attracting buyers from all over the world, “Toques & Clochers” puts up for auction the most promising barrels of AOC Limoux. A share of the proceeds are then used to finance the renovation of bell towers in surrounding villages. Every year the auction is hosted by one of France’s great chefs popularly referred to as a “Toques”, the traditional white chef’s hat....

Musée
du Quercorb

Musée du Quercorb - Puivert

The Quercorb Museum, with its attractive displays, allows you to discover this fascinating little region. Visual and sound exhibits recreate everyday life in Quercorb at the beginning of the 20th century. The "instrumentarium" is resonant with music and displays nine musical instruments of the middle ages that have been reconstructed on the model of the sculptures of musicians in Puivert Castle. You can use headphones to listen to 9 Occitan troubadour "cansos" while you follow the words and medieval music reconstructed on goatskin parchment. In the museum orchard there are displays including a still and a collection of objects related to harvesting fruit and processing it into fruit brand...

Auberge du Faby

Auberge du Faby - Rouvenac

In the heart of the Cathar castles and the beginnings of the Pyrenees, between Blanquette & Corbieres, we have a wonderful little restaurant with an honest, fine cuisine in the country. Situated in the square if the Village of Rouvenac between Esperaza and Chalabre. It has a good reputation with locals for consistent quality and first class ingredients. All the meat is organic and there are imaginative vegetarian options. A moment to relax with family and friends at the Auberge du Faby in Rouvenac. An unforgettable culinary expirience with all the flavors and charm of the Haute Vallée awaits you...

Château des Ducs
de Joyeuses

Château des Ducs de Joyeuses - Couiza

This listed 16th century chateau is located on extensive grounds on the banks of the River Aude. The ancient fortress-turned-hotel subtly blends medieval tradition with modern confort - and it has an excellent restaurant too (it is important that you reserve a table in advance). The house was built by Jean de Joyeuse, first Governor of Narbonne and Lieutenant General in Languedoc, between 1540 and 1550, and his son, Guillaume III assumed the job of completing this magnificant chateau after he died. With a beautiful courtyard where one can dine in the summer months, the castle is a very special place to stay. With a swimming pool and tennis court, the hotel is a perfect base to combine relaxation with good food. Close to Cathares and 30 km to Carcassonne, there many cathedrals and historic monuments to visit. The Chateau does not have an elevator, so if you have a problem with stairs this may not be the best choice for you....

Restaurant
Le Carnotzet

Restaurant Le Carnotzet - Couiza

This restaurant is nestled at the foot of Rennes le Chateau and bathes the mystery of Abbé Saunière. They offer all their passions with gourmet foods, a mixture of authentic cuisine and local gourmet cuisine. Actually like the Chef! ! Alain Ibert-Jorge . Rich in the kitchen of these origins, it also acquired its gourmet cuisine during his many years in Paris. It is not uncommon in Veronique and Franck , the seafood gratin lobster sauce Béarnaise Garbure borders on the space of a weekend on their slates suggestions. But do not forget what has served as an alibi the decoration of this place "a Savoyard chalet" the inevitable "specialties Savoyarde" squeegees , tartiflettes , melted and reblochonnade....

L'Abbaye -
Château de Camon

L'Abbaye - Château de Camon

In the heart of a rebellious and sometimes violent Languedoc lies the château of Camon, a place of peace and tranquility. Heir to a long monastic past, with the appearance of a manorial fortress, Camon invites us to experience a subtle mixture of history and architecture. Our restaurant opened in June 2006 and has been a great success. Dining in the wonderfully atmospheric cloisters in the summer or the intimate dining room in the cooler months, whatever the season, Tom Sleigh, our chef, cooks great food using superb local and seasonal ingredients...
