Château de Bouilhonnac vers des Cabanes dans les Bois

A walk or bike ride from Bouilhonnac to Trèbes along the Canal du Midi via Les Cabanes dans les Bois. In Bouilhonnac, visit the old village and its castle. The ruined castle was built at the end of the 15th century. The vaults of the chapel and the coat of arms that can be seen above a north-east-facing door bear witness to this date. This coat of arms is that of Pierre d'Abzac, Archbishop of Narbonne from 1494 to 1502. In Trèbes, without crossing the bridge, you can also continue to see the harbor and quench your thirst in one of the cafes at the harbor. Then go back to the bridge to continue the walk. (4) You can visit the harbor along the canal and go back. (1) In Bouilhonnac (D/A) take on your left Rue du Château d'Eau which will lead you to the Donjon and the ruins of the castle that dominates this amazing old village. Go around the Donjon and go down right at Rue du Donjon and left and then right again past the small church. Turn left into Rue du Parc. (2)Turn right on the signposted road "Chemin Notre-Dame-des-Champs" towards Villedubert. Continue straight until the D101 which you follow 50 meters on the right...

Canal du Midi

Canal du Midi

Both the Romans and Leonardo Da Vinci already had the idea of creating a river connection between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. However, there was always a problem. For example, a way had to be found to overcome the 194-meter-high Seuil de Naurouze ridge. Over the centuries, the pressure increased. A canal had to be built so that the ships of the French fleet would not have to make the 2000 kilometer detour around enemy Spain. A canal connecting the Atlantic to the Mediterranean would not only be a huge time saver. They also avoided difficulties with the Spaniards. In the end it was an engineer from Béziers named Pierre-Paul Riquet who came up with the idea of diverting another river that originated on the ridge, the so-called Fontaine de la Grave. This would give a canal sufficient water supply, so that a canal could be dug around the ridge. King Louis XIV was aware of the canal's economic, political and military interests, which led to the construction of the Canal du Midi in 1666. Tens of thousands of workers worked for 14 years on the 328 structures that the Canal du Midi has, such as bridges, aqueducts and basins. The canal was completed in 1681. Pierre-Paul Riquet was never allowed to view the channel in its entirety. He died a year before delivery. The Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1969. The economic importance of the canal has since been minimized because commercial inland shipping has largely disappeared. Along the canal are several towns, monuments and harbors that are worth a visit. A nice experience is to explore the canal by boat, but a nice walk or bike ride along the Canal du Midi is also highly recommended!

Le Quai

Le Quai - Trèbes

We looking forward to welcoming you to our restaurant Le Quai in the heart of Trèbes. We are located in the port of Trèbes on the pleasant boulevard, where all pleasure craft pass by. On our terrace you can enjoy life on the water, with a delicious menu that we change every week! We strive to satisfy you as much as possible. "Extensive menu, good kitchen, and very friendly service. What caused some confusion is that the terrace of this shop is in front of the adjacent fish restaurant, and vice versa. Both restaurants looked promising but we opted for this case as the menu also included meat dishes, such as, for example, magret de canard. We did not regret it. Everything was delicious. Both, tasty magret and dorade, everything was delicious!"...

Château et Remparts de la Cité de Carcassonne

2500 years of history !! The imposing fortifications of the citadel of Carcassonne occupy a rocky outcrop overlooking the course of the River Aude. At the foot of their walls stretches the lower town, a bastide founded in 1248 by Louis IX. Carcassonne has been a settlement since the 6th century BC and was a Roman town, fortified during the later imperial period, before becoming a medieval citadel. It has examples of 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,600 years of history. A rich and varied tour is available and includes many areas not otherwise visited: ramparts, hoardings, projection room, lapidary museum. Guided tours, lectures or audio-guides available, subject to booking...

EL CAMPO

El Campo - Trèbes

Serge and Martine Berard had already forged a reputation when they created the restaurant "Pepone" in Carcassonne. After some sabbatical years they reopened the "El Campo". Double side kitchen menu offers a wide selection pizzas, homemade fresh pasta, carpaccio or platos combinados (which constitutes a full meal), tapas (hot or cold) and other dishes just as tasty as each other. Conclusion: you must return to discover everything. Add to that a lovely host and theme nights off and we can only rejoice...

Le Moulin
de Trèbes

Le Moulin de Trèbes - Trèbes

Just east of Carcassonne, is the lively village of Trebes, with shops, an art gallery that shows international artists, swimming pool, a bridge with a view of the river Aude, and last but definitely not least the Canal du Midi. Walk along the canal, and you will see a myriad of boats, moored or cruising along the canal. Directly on the Canal du Midi at the Trebes Lock, this very pleasant restaurant offers great food in a peaceful setting. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available. The chef does a wonderful job of using fresh, local ingredients to show off the cuisine of this area of France....
