La Brasserie du Rosier - Revel

In the central square is the house where Pierre-Paul Riquet (1609-1680), inventor of the Canal du Midi, lived. Here you are very near to the origins of the Canal du Midi. This exceptional structure links Toulouse and Sète along the Mediterranean shore. In 1996, it was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site as an example of human creative genius...
  Specialities

The Saint-Ferréol lake comes into view some 6 km from Revel. Here you are well and truly at the sources of the Canal du Midi. The Saint-Ferréol lake is an idyllic spot, perfect for bathing and just lounging. Created in the 17th century, this 67-hectare ornamental lake is at the heart of the exhilarating venture of the construction of the Canal du Midi. It is the masterpiece of its water supply mechanism: a complex, surprising system put into operation by Pierre-Paul Riquet.

To find out all about this structure, unique in the world, a visit to the Museum and Gardens of the Canal du Midi is a must. Opened in 2008 the museum situated at the foot of the lake wall is organised into 6 thematic rooms. It is a pleasure to explore them, to see them bring to life through models, audiovisual equipment, original documents etc., the epic creation of the Canal du Midi and also the singular personality of its founder. Built in the shade, besides waterfalls and the water shower of an opulent, romantic 19th century park, the museum and the Saint-Ferréol lake form a landscape and heritage of a remarkable quality. A must see!

Cabardès

A.O.C. Cabardès

The Cabardès region is situated to the west of Languedoc and to the south of the central massif, a geologist's dream, balanced between east and west, the sun and the coolness, the heathland and the mountain. It is here that the winds cross. They bring the intense mediterranean heat necessary for southern "cépages" (grape types) such as syrah and grenache, and the cool atlantic humidity for the ocean "cépages": merlot, cabernet-sauvignon, cabernet-franc, cot and fer-servadou, to prosper. The vineyards and wines of Cabardès have been recognized as AOC since february 1999. The quality of the grapes, the wine-making, the blending of the "cépages" and the keeping of the wines has allowed us to obtain the best balance between fruit and structure, fullness and complexity, intensity and elegance. Cabardès assembles 30 châteaux and domaines over 500 productive hectares spread amongst 18 villages. 20000 hectolitres are produced each year,of which 60% are exported....

Vin de Pays d’Oc,
Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vin de Pays de l’Aude

Vin de Pays means 'country wine' to the French, but to outsiders it can mean New World with a French accent. These are the wines which the French authorities unreservedly allow to be labelled with the grape variety from which they were made. It is difficult to over-estimate the importance of this large and growing category of wines for the future of the French wine trade. The French themselves may have tended to see any Vin de Pays as distinctly inferior to any appellation contrôlée wine, whereas many of their customers abroad see the better Vins de Pays as good-value, user-friendly, sometimes high-quality non-conformist emissaries from the world's most revered wine producer....

Musée & Jardins du Canal du Midi

Musée & Jardins du Canal du Midi - Lac de Saint-Ferréol/Revel

Located in the heart of the Montagne Noir, at the junction of three departments (Haute-Garonne, Tarn and Aude), the basin of St. Ferreol is for generations, one of the favorite rendezvous of Recreational enthusiasts and outdoor. Its beach, its supervised swimming, water sports, fishing preserve its and its picnic areas are forgetting that Lake St. Ferreol is primarily a retention pond, the centerpiece of the supply network of channel noon! It is in this natural setting that from the early 19th century, romantic gardens were gradually developed. In 1855, the installation of the water jet endowed them with a refreshing atmosphere for strolling and loitering. Instead of approval, the gardens of the museum can also discover the hydraulic principles that govern the supply of canal water. The "ps" (available to groups by reservation), lets get to the heart of the dam and reach the control system and valves installed in 1829. They top a second gallery, "the vault drain", inaccessible to the public and which is currently the main flow of water in the basin...

Musée du Verre
de Sorèze

Musée du Verre de Sorèze - Sorèze

Located south of the Tarn at the foot of the Montagne Noire, Sorèze a museum of glass unique, housed in the former hospital of the town built under Charles X. It was created in 1996 by Yves Blaquiere, erudite man, passionate about history and glass. The association "Les Amis de Sorèze", which was created in 1998, manages the museum with the support of the mayor and organizes exhibitions and conferences. The museum currently contains over 1600 pieces of glass - from antiquity to the mid-twentieth century - gained through a reasoned policy of purchase and the generosity of many donors. Two major specificities characterize collections: - Drinking glasses seventeenth to the nineteenth century - The blue-green glass of Languedoc The Museum of Glass is a valuable cultural development of the city of Sorèze. "Like a fingerprint, the breath of the glass marked his time, in this village where mind blowing and southerly wind"...

Saissac

Saissac

The Château de Saissac is a ruined Cathar castle in the southernmost tip of the commune of Saissac in the Aude département in the north-west of Carcassonne, France. It was once the residence of the powerful vassal family of Trencavel. Today the ruins are protected as official historical monuments of France. Saissac is mentioned in a legal document (an Acte) from the Abbey of Montolieu in 958, and again in a text of 960. The village is typical of the Black Mountains and is built between the ravines of the rivers Aiguebelle and Vernassonne, just above their confluence. Things to see in the village include the porte d'Autan, a lavoire built in granite, a second covered lavoire and a fine echauguette. Vestiges of the city walls (enceinte) are still visible around the ancient village. These walls date from the Fourteenth century, the same period that the castle of Saissac was restored...

Castres

Castres

The city of Castres lies in the south-west of the Tarn department in the Midi-Pyrénées. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the Tarn countryside being home to many lovely chateaux, with glorious sunflower-filled fields providing a perfect backdrop for these elegant houses of days gone by. Castres is built on the River Agout, and the old houses on either side lean their upper stories out over the water as though reaching out to the opposite bank. These were once the homes of the weavers and the dyers, and this connection with the textile industry is still important to Castres today. Castres is full of history, and there are reminders of its past very much in evidence in the modern city. The city was founded around a Benedictine Abbey, but also existed in Roman times as Castroum. Monuments worth seeing are the Church of Saint Benoit, the fountain and the statue in the Place Jean Jaurès, the town hall which lies in the old Bishop’s palace, and the Quay of the Jacobains, viewed from the Pont Neuf. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Goya Museum, which houses the largest collection of Spanish art in France. Castres is an excellent place to be if you are one of the many people who love the buzz and colour of French markets. The town has two daily markets, with fresh produce on offer in the main square, and a bric-a-brac or flea market in the Place Albanique. On Saturdays the general market stretches down the riverside, making a most picturesque place to shop!...
