In 1310 they sold the house in exchange for Viscount Armagnac, pastor and then cardinal. He was called to Rome and purchased the church of Arzens, the remnant of two thorns from the "real crown ».

Malepère

A.O.P. Malepère - Côtes de la Malepère

The Malepère region was awarded AOC status on May 2nd 2007. It is a hilly area south-west of the city of Carcassonne which is included in the appellation along with 31 other towns and villages. Although the area claims a great history of wine making it was in the 1970’s that the vineyards began to be replanted and VDQS status was granted. VDQS is the intermediary wine designation between Vin de Pays and AOC and is a testing ground for would-be AOC’s to prove that wines from all the producers share a common personality before they can be awarded full AOC status. Although an obscure region the Malepère is well worth a visit and offers a very different terrain to the more recognizable Languedoc appellations. There are many interesting medieval circular villages to visit. They were built this way to form ramparts to act as protection for the inhabitants. The Cathar religion was strong here and the area is immersed in history and folklore...

Fanjeaux

Fanjeaux

Fanjeaux is an historic mediaeval hilltop village with 16th c. market place and a Belevedere giving spectacular views over the Lauragais plain. It is hard to imagine that this sleepy little town with only 900 inhabitants was a busy commercial and social center of 3,000 people during the time of Saint Dominic. When he arrived on foot with the Bishop of Osma in 1206, Fanjeaux’s narrow streets must have been filled with peddlers, pilgrims, farmers and even soldiers. The women would gather to wash their clothes on the stones at the edge of a spring where a washing place still stands today...

Monastère de Prouilhe

Monastère de Prouilhe - Fanjeaux

The Dominican nuns are indeed the elder sisters of the Dominican family, having been founded nearly ten years before the Order of Preachers came into being. Their first site, Prouilhe, was initially a refuelling stop for priests combating the heresy of Catharism in southwest France. (Catharism was an anti-Catholic, ascetic movement that saw the world as evil and denied the Trinity and the divinity of Christ). This first monastery at Prouilhe was essentially a work of mercy on the part of Dominic, not the fulfilment of some abstract dream about the beauty of enclosed contemplative life. It was a practical response to an urgent pastoral need. What was he to do with the small group of Cathar women he had converted at Fanjeaux, and how could he stop other young women from impoverished Catholic families from being seduced into heresy through the free education the Cathars offered? Obviously a safe house was necessary. A monastic community grew out of these unpromising beginnings, thanks to donations of land and goods and to willing lay helpers...
